Panasonic terminates its TV business

...They stuck with plasma when everyone focused on LCD. ....

Panasonic stopped making Plasma in 2013. That's not an immediate cause of today's news. Whatever happened today. P-sonic has not sold TVs in the USA since 2016.

Panasonic has been going out of business for years. It used to be a big place so it is taking a long time to fall down.

My 11 year old Panasonic plasma large-screen TV is running great. All that plasma makes the electric meter jump with every jump-cut in the video, but who cares. The audio reminds me of a $13 boom-box, but TV audio has always sucked. The picture is good, better than most cable programming.

It would be sad for P-sonic to shrink to a battery company.

Panasonic are into a lot more than that, but they are trying to move into more lucrative lines, sometimes failing.
As for TVs, Philips sold out long back, basically it has become a generic business, as has LED lighting.
In India, most of the big brands don't sell TV smaller than 32" , the mass market has moved to 43 and 55, and panels which fail are replaces with salvaged panels from scrapped TVs, not available new for smaller sizes.
And cell phone companies are selling TVs now...
Same thing in LED, the production does not involve glass melting (needed in fluorescent and incandescent lamps), so the investment is less. And plenty of parts suppliers, so starting your own brand is easy.

Panasonic had already outsourced some of its TV production to external partners. However, mid-range and high-end models, including LCD and OLED TVs, are currently being produced at the factory in Czech Republic, which employs approximately 1000 people.

The factory in Czech Republic was established in 1996 to manufacture CRT TVs before switching to production of plasma TVs. It will scale down but remain in operation to produce other types of video products such as Blu-ray players as well as heat pumps.

Can't see much money in Blu-Ray players, but HEAT-PUMPS are the one of the new buzzwords in the "Fight Global Warming" business. 😀

Panasonic Aquaria air to water heat pumps are already with us.

Too late already in 2013. Sony and Sharp invested heavily in LCD and the Koreans did even better with it. I'm afraid they missed the boat and should have focused on it at least 4 or 5 yrs earlier like everyone else rather than pinning their hopes to the plasma mast.

Sony sold their stake in the joint venture to make panels to their partners Samsung.
Philips too sold their share to partners LG in the LCD panel business..
Sharp is a big player in cell phone displays.

It is simply a bean counter decision, the biggest changes in Philips have been under a CEO who is apparently a CPA.

Bayer used to dominate Polycarbonate, along with GE...
Now GE sold their plastic business to Sabic of Saudi Arabia, and Bayer has divested its stake to a spin off called Covestro.
And the market for that material here is dominated by Samsung, Mitsubishi, LG Chemical, Lotte (?) and others.
The big corporations have very high expectations of mark ups, and if the business becomes competitive, they prefer to walk away.
But LG and Samsung have not done that, there is a lesson about management in these instances.
