Thank you ZM. Though some here may find that statement obvious (I do not). It's a real "Light Bulb" one for me. It is so easy to forget the basics and just add more "stuff" to work around a problem or a components deficiencies, because sometimes we may have become "blinkered". (That does not mean I'll sell my Tokins, but just may use other things instead) 🙂

Well, I never claimed to be consistent. On the other hand, I don't actually own an Ongaku, the presentation was far too coloured for my liking despite the oohs and aahs from the cognescenti.

I do own one rather modest valve amplifier sporting KT88 outputs, and have yet to plug it in. I bought it in a moment of nostalgia, and as they say, "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be."

Clearly those comments were designed to wind people up. As I've already stated twice, I've never heard a VFET amplifier. However, I have two reference amplifiers that I can compare it to when it arrives:

It was pure hyperbole, in keeping with the theme of this thread. After all, did you really believe I had sold "an arm, a leg and a testicle" for this amplifier?
 
That's lower than the IHF standard input figure at 10 nF. Not much of a problem.

BTW not sure if you were joining in the levity there or just made an error. Isn't the standard 1 nF? The Tokin 2SK180 exceeds that by a factor of 2.5 and many of the other Tokin parts by a factor of 8.

Yes, I realise that it's easy enough to add a buffer (a la "The Beast") but it's inelegant. Eventually I may come around to your "big horns, small Class A" school of thought, since I bought an old Post Office in the country in which to spend my retirement (see below) that has a space with 10,000 cu ft volume like your listening room. But I haven't been here very long and it's still a bit of a clutter.

But horns made out of MDF still don't have the cachet of the old Klipsch, which were built by shipwrights by the looks of them.

I checked actual test for THF-51s, and got 1 nF effective input capacitance operated Common Drain.

Well, at AU$100 odd that's a better proposition. I truly wish I could go someplace and hear one of these things running to find out if it's worth the trouble though. I can get 35W out of a cheap pair of JFETs in class A with off-the-shelf power trannies, so it would have to be pretty spectaular.

The Sony TA-N7B is certainly a magnificent piece of work. That said, I wouldn't trade my JM-S7 for it. Why, the Victor is pure V-FET output bliss where the N7B isn't due to the cascoded output BJT's.
