The Weak Links of Today's Audio

Boy, I’m really confused now with this latest revelation.
In this case, revelation = marketing.

First we were told that the 2 channel stereo we have been listening to for all these years is really no good. It has serious flaws and weaknesses. So all the many hour of using them and thoroughly enjoying the music from them was a just a waste of time. We couldn’t have possibly been enjoying it. Too many flaws.
That's the "F" part of FUD.

1) No one was told two channel stereo is no good.
2) No one was told multichannel achieves nirvana.

Here are your posts regarding 2 channel stereo over the last five days. Despite your denial it's pretty clear that you consider 2 channel stereo to have significant weaknesses and therefore not be very good.

Here's Floyd Toole's comments… He identified two weak links in today's audio:

1) Recording quality.
2) Two Channel Stereo.

2 channel stereo was a really sticky problem but I think it's going to change pretty fast now.

They're so satisfied with two channel stereo that they spend hours, months, and years trying to correct the problems caused by two channel stereo.

I'd expect the people most happy with two channel stereo are those who don't post in this forum devising strategies to overcome the weaknesses of two channel stereo.

The arrays suffer from all the same two channel stereo problems all normal two channel stereo speakers suffer from.

how would you listen to seven channel audio on headphones?

Quite easily. The basic maths for this has been in place for decades and a lot of research is ongoing to improve things driven by the gaming industry. The limitation is mainly calibrating your personal ear canal and HRTF into the system. This bit still needs work.

I had foolishly assumed that the rise of yoofs listening to music on Iphones would drive more music being released in a binaural format, but of course yoofs don't care. At least mine don't.

If your having immersion issues with stereo you are probably just not listening loud enough, if the sound starts sounding unpleasant before 110dB or so your EQ is off or your speakers/amps incapable. Just look at ASR most small speakers are getting very distorted even at 85dB, how do you expect immersion if your listening at lower SPL than the actual event?

Actually the events I go to are 75-80dB average in the seat. So I can't see how listening much louder than the reality would give me the feeling of being in the hall I get whilst there.
