I've sent a link to the two raw's on google drive in PM :)

First I should apologize for more off-topic, and try to make this at least partially on-topic.

My wife recently bought a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. In the past she relied on me to do all the post-processing, even for shoots that I wasn't involved in. She showed real interest in learning how to do it herself, and the vast majority of instructional videos (youtube, etc.) are about Abobe products, so she decided to just spend the money on a subscription. I've bought her a Mac for Christmas as well.

It irks me a bit because there are extremely powerful and easy to use alternatives that cost nothing (unless one decides to donate). Both Rawtherapee and Darktable are more than capable, easy to use, free, and available for all major operating systems.

Tony,

Here is what I did to your RAW files with Rawtherapee in a few minutes. Actually I did a little extra work on one of them in GIMP as well - see if you can spot it :) ) So much of this (saturation, contrast, etc.) is personal choice so view this as more of a demonstration. I tried not to go too crazy with them. As you know, if these were JPEG files from the camera it would be nearly impossible to do what I have done with the RAW files. If you want, I can send you the Rawtherapee "sidecar" files (.pp3). If you stick them in the same directory with the RAW files and then open the RAW files in Rawtherapee, all the settings that I used will be applied and you can see what I did - perhaps start playing with them to get them where you want them. PM me and let me know so we can let these fine folks continue with the topic at hand. :)

Note: I would normally take time to edit out sensor dust, as you did.

Soundchaser, thank you for returning us to the topic.
Nice looking TT. Does it need some TLC before being delivered for Christmas? ;)

Thanks Cal;

It could use some silicone fluid for the cueing function. I have never done that kind of repair before. Also repairing a pair of AR-38b speaker to give him plus a use HT receiver (with an outboard phono stage) and some LPs. He will be a happy guy I think.

Thanks for pulling us in Cal (and sorry for my reply below). I was actually thinking maybe I should make a suggestion that the photography stuff be slpit off into it's own thread. We don't have a "The Photography Thread" here in the lounge do we?

cogitech, that's quite the boost in both Saturation and brightness (without blowing anything out!) I think I downloaded raw therapy recently to be able to play with raw files from my new smart phone. I am interested to see how you did it! I had wanted to boost these more than I had managed (the originals are a bit underexposed).

Tony.

Here in Toronto, we call a fixed gear bike a "fixie". There is no free coaster (you can ride it backwards) and usually no friction brakes. Popular with bike couriers downtown...

OT again but.... having read about at least one person losing a spouse because they were hit by somebody on one of these bikes... I'd like to see them taken off the street. /end rant

I bought a $39 camera app for my phone, Hallide II

I try to avoid any subscription based software, so I use Affinity Photo for playing with pictures. My idea of digital photo editing usually just involves tweaking the contrast, color balance and saturation, lightening up those "glowing tubes in a dark room" pictures and some cropping or size reduction for posting on the web. The free Nikon View editor that came with my camera 20 years ago worked good for me until Microsoft killed it with a W10 update early this year. I got the Affinity program for $39. Many say it works as good or better than Lightroom, but I have not explored more than a few of it's features.

I have never played much with RAW files but I have three cameras that provide them, so I downloaded RawTherapee. Now I'll just have to figure out how to use it.

I am not a phone person, so I use whatever is cheap, but it must have a decent camera for those "I didn't bring my camera bag" moments. I had been using a $200 Motorola until AT&T informed me that as of Jan 1 it would no longer work on their network, and I needed to buy a new phone. Since I had to get a new phone, I switched to a cheaper carrier and went looking for an affordable phone with a good camera.

Given the Covid issue, going into phone stores and playing with all the phones wasn't a good idea, and I found a good deal on the discontinued iPhone XS, so I got it. Despite all the good reviews on the camera, I am unimpressed, and prefer the pictures from the old Motorola. The iPhone pictures are OK, but things like clouds look more like a painting then a picture. They look like something gets lost in the compression algorithm, so....

In an attempt to bypass the Apple specific HEIC format and the conversion from HEIC to something the my W10 PC can eat, I bought the Hallide app. It lets the USER, not Apple control the camera in manual or PHD (Push Here Dummy) mode, and save the files in RAW, JPG, and a few others.

I wasn't really eager to support my wife in her decision to subscribe to Creative Cloud, as I am adamant that it is almost completely unnecessary to pay for software these days. I also wasn't very excited about spending money on a Mac for her.

However, life is short and she has wanted a Mac for a long time, and COVID isolation sucks, and she wants to do the processing herself now, and... and... So who am I to stand in the way? She is very, very excited about the Mac and she has already learned quite a lot about Lightroom (running in Windows on an old PC I cobbled together for her, for now). She did a very nice job with our most recent wedding shoot.

I had never heard of Affinity before I read your post. Maybe I'll download the free trial onto her Mac over the holidays so she can try it out. It is always nice to have different software options.

Seems off-topic, but we are discussing buying things too. :)

The TSYNTH that I bought in post #4567 is now alive and working. It still needs a case, but that will have to wait until the weather is conducive to some outdoor table saw time.

Some of the canned patches are pretty lame, and some sound a lot like those I made for my multi synth. This is expected since both of these synths use the same CPU and audio development tools. It's definitely $92 worth of fun (I already had the Teensy module, audio shield, the pots, encoder and knobs).

The forecast calls for anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of snow on Wednesday and Thursday. Today's outdoor time will be consumed with the continuing Sawzall VS deck joists adventure.

Preordered the new Khadas Tone2Pro DAC, should get here in January.
ESS ES9038Q2M, new balanced rca jacks, MCA, usbc for 5v linear ps.
I love my original Tone board, looking forward to the new one - it is self-contained rather than a raw board.

Yes, it’s the right thing to do.

Now, after helping her with that new Mac etc. and you are ready to start negotiating for that huge set of horn speakers you’ve always wanted, things should go more smoothly :D

It happened in reverse order, actually. :)

A few weeks back I showed her the Silbury drawing on Scott's website, explained that they are 6 feet tall but I would do my best to make them look nice.

She said, "Go for it. If you want to make them, you should make them. Life is too short..."

Now I am thinking I might be able to go even bigger. :D

+1. I was looking for a wagon when I got my E90... Nice to have a "wagon" that still handles alas I couldn't find one that was manual, and affordable.

I had a 2003 Honda Oddssey that had the transmission slipping in 3rd with only 115,000 miles on it. Dealership wanted $6500+install to fix it.
That vehicle was replaced for the most part with a 1991 Toyota Previa with 5 speed manual.

I would buy a new minivan at a dealer if it comes with 5 peed manual. Otherwise no deal.
