CLIO Pocket

Back to laptops. There are quite a few excellent PC and Mac laptops currently on the market that support Thunderbolt 1, 2, 3 (the latter usually combined in a USB Type C port) or that have an ExpressCard slot. ANY of those port types will support FireWire perfectly including supplying bus powering to the FW-01 audio interface. Thunderbolt 1 or 2 will require Apple's $30 US adapter, Thunderbolt 3 will require two adapters, Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 and then the Apple adapter. ExpressCard FireWire adapters are inexpensive, easy to get and totally reliable as well. There is absolutely no need to get an old laptop with a FireWire port.

It is now June 2020 and I wonder what would be your best current recommendation for my ClioFW01. I have an aging 2013 MacBook (never failed me on the Firewire port) and would love to update to something with a bit more power and better screen, because I also want to do photo editing using Windows 10 software. So I am looking at something in the MacBook Air with Retina screen?

Any advice about something that is certain to work (would be the worst situation to buy one, install Windows and still not work - try to explain that to the seller).

If indeed there is a Windows laptop that would also do the job and not having to install Windows 10, that would be great as I wouldn't never be using Mac OS.

Cheers, Joe

I did same thought and search process some 1y+ ago. Decided to go for the FW-12 upgrade instead by Audiomatica to get the device to support USB directly

There is a path in theory

***
Firewire 400 To Thunderbolt 3 USB-C On Windows Computers
Any brand Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 lead or adapter
Apple Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter
Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter
A healthy disregard for the messages of doom saying that the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter is not “qualified” to work on Windows.

As the article says the MOTU Ultralite Hybrid Mk3 will work like that... but I'm guessing both of those adapters will set you back about half of what the upgrade will cost unless you find them used on Ebay or such.

Also there will still be a considerable risk CLIO unit will not like this cascading of converters.
