the bigger the better so I hear.
While my wife might agree, keep in mind there is a point of diminishing returns. Too large and your flow rate is reduced but looking at that machine, I think you probably hear music through those pipes rather than worry about a build up. Either way, nice to see that set up Paul, thanks for sharing as always.
A bit pre-emptive, but off to buy a new vacuum cleaner in about an hour.
The old* one "made a bad sound and some smoke and then stopped".
I checked it out and there is a momentary, bright arc behind the switch when flipped to the on position and the motor doesn't even try to start.
* less than 2 years, of course, which is about standard vacuum cleaner quality these days.

Psst,
Tell your wife, You'll buy her a Dyson if you're allowed to use her birthday present money in part, and see what she says. Anyone who's used one knows what I mean. Maybe not made of steel, but vacuuming got taken off the 'chore' list and put onto the 'stuff you just do' list.
Not kidding man.

Hey Cal,
Our local brick and mortar vacuum store told my mother "never buy a Dyson, the vast majority of vacuums brought in for repair are Dysons."
I don't think any of them are any good anymore, to be honest. Doesn't matter how much you spend.
Same as all other appliances. Buy a Bosch dishwasher and you get 6 years out of it. Buy a $400 Amana and get the same 6 years. Ask me how I know.
CR rates a number of Shark models very highly (top 3, in fact) , esp. for the price. Best rated Dyson is #7 on the list, costs double, and it isn't rated highly for reliability. Going to give my money to Shark this time and cross my fingers that I get 3 good years out of it. On sale at CT right now for 60% off.

Okay, you da boss. All I be sayin' is that I never had a vacuum that reduced the workload like this before.
When people tell me Dyson sucks, I smile until they realize what they have said. I hope to have this same feeling years from now. If not, I will bow gracefully, but in the meantime...

Our Shark is still alive and entering year number 5. We have three of them at the church and the only complaint is their weight. Nobody wants to carry them upstairs.
I read somewhere on diyAudio that Dyson is the Bose of vacuum cleaners.....and everybody knose that Bose blose.
...vacuum.... cross my fingers that I get 3 good years out of it.....
After we killed a fancy-brand "bagless" plastic vac in 5 years, we pulled this out of reserve. It has worked weekly over 30 of the last 60+ years. New cord $5. "Bags" are 100 for the price of a happy-meal.

Poor girl looks like the effort of holding it up is painful!
I recently bought a Dyson V10 pet vacuum. So far it works great, but the chamber fills up quickly. Much prefer our Miele vacuum cleaner. The only thing it doesn't do it go up stairs easily and it plugs into the wall. Like everything they make, it is very quiet too.

That certainly seems the exception to the rule these days. Newer vacuums are egregious offenders, but don't appliances in general seem to make more noise than they used to?...Like everything they make, it is very quiet too.
I think this has gradually become normalized as a result of no more in-store demos, as well as the apparent reduced sensitivity of the general population to noise pollution in general.
Maybe I should just be grateful that I can still hear all this stuff well enough to be annoyed by it.
I've never paid more than 40$ for a vacuum,. My main vacuum is a small ShopVac special buy, metal can. I now have a bagless Bissell designed for pet hair that I found in the trash in the building here. better suction than the Shopvac, and quieter, but no good for spills.
Throwing away vacuum cleaners after 2 years?! What happened to keeping vacuum cleaner repair stores in business? It always amazes me how the "older fellow behind the counter" can ask just a few questions and produce the right part every time. And what if the cartel or FBI is on to you and you have to disappear?
Only thing I bought recently is a used remote on ebay for the Samsung DVD player so I can update the firmware so it can become one of my "audio" players. Yes, a used remote on ebay with shipping costs twice as much as I bought the player for. Let's hoping this one gets through customs free or it will be 3 times.

We hated the old one and we're glad it died, actually. It was way louder than necessary, heavy, and didn't do a very good job.
I have to say this new Shark is very impressive. I vacuumed a small area that was done with the old vacuum yesterday (before it died) and the amount of dirt that the Shark pulled up from the "clean" carpet was a bit shocking.
It is also far quieter and can be used in a multitude of different configurations depending on what needs to be cleaned. The facts that it is one of the top-rated vacuums, has a 5 year warranty, and was 60% off made it a no-brainer.

I've had my Shop Vac for 10 years so far. It's one of the cheap blue & gray plastic ones I thought wouldn't be good for more than 5 years, but it's really held up well. Three years ago I got tired of buying those filter canisters so I added a cyclone just to see what would happen.
Boy, did it make a huge difference! The vast majority of debris winds up in the bucket instead of in the vacuum itself, and I don't have to change the filter nearly as often. I'm fairly certain it's also helping to extend the life of the Shop Vac by reducing the load on the motor and the amount of dust that reaches the bearings.
The downside was that I had to mount the whole Rube Goldberg contraption on a dedicated wooden chassis - but that wasn't a huge deal really. It is a woodworking shop after all.
Purchased today: two bags of coffee from The Roasterie.

That was the go-to demo for door-to-door vacuum salesmen back in the day.
Got this bagless HEPA rated Hoover new about 4 years ago for only $30, it's still like new.
Pretty light to carry. You just have to empty and clean it after each use, manual cord.
Really good suction, even on medium. A little noisy, but I'd buy another one.
Sprint QuickVac Upright | UH20040 | Hoover

Grew up with that one. I still has the slightly newer model with the retractible cord at my other place. After we killed a fancy-brand "bagless" plastic vac in 5 years, we pulled this out of reserve.
Both the dishwasher and the vacuum are noticeably quieter than their predecessors.but don't appliances in general seem to make more noise than they used to?

I have 3 of them and they just never say die. One's a tiny little thing but thinks it's big like the others.I've had my Shop Vac for 10 years so far.

I remember distinctly when the Electrolux sales guy performed that miracle for my mother, circa 1982.
It worked. She bought it (or rather, my father did). That was a damned fine vacuum and lasted about 20 years, IIRC.
EDIT: After some googling I found it. The E2000:

Price was $654.50 CAD in 1982 (!) - Good thing it lasted so long.
Come to think of it, it lasted longer than that. The powerhead died (or the connecting wires) and my mother gave it to my wife and I because we had all bare floors. That would have been around 2001. We used it for about 3 years, but then eventually needed something that could do carpets. At that time we gave it to one of my co-workers and he used it for at least 5 years (then left the company). He was a frugal Eastern European guy and I bet he is still using it if it still runs.

P.S. Since then, I can't even count how many crappy vacuums I have owned. I bet it has been at least 6.
Wow, that looks like the modern deluxe unit. The one I have is just like PRR's but one year newer maybe?
