10F/8424 & RS225-8 FAST / WAW Ref Monitor

So,Before I start off on my project, here are my thoughts.
I'm using the TC9FD18-08 and RS225-8 drivers

1.Sealed cabinet is the way to go.

2.Both the FR and woofer to be flush mounted ?

3.Dagger cone of 1.1L,Total cabinet of 24L

4.Simple bracing is sufficient,horizontally

5.The cabinet will have a butyl rubber based damping material on all internal surfaces if I can procure it,else I will go with tar sheets (but tar sheets degrade over time)

6.Eggshell foam for lining the cabinet.

7.how do I stuff the dagger cone?I remember reading to use fibreglass.Any alternatives to it?

8.Gaskets to be used everywhere.

9.Roundovers of the front face dont matter acoustically?

10.X prefers the Passive crossovers(and so do I since it provides a more clean audiochain),but, what would one gain with using MiniDSP?I will provide multiple binding posts so that the mini DSP option is always available.

11.The woofer is on the top and FR at the bottom(ie the cabinet is flipped over)

12.The full range will be centered for better looks compared to the offset.

13.R1 in the crossover will be lowered for the TC9FD18-08 to 2.2R or 1R.

14.12GA wire for wiring.

15.The FR and woofer will be provided with chamfers on the mounting baffle,on the back.

Thanks for your interest in this. My answers below in BOLD.

So,Before I start off on my project, here are my thoughts.
I'm using the TC9FD18-08 and RS225-8 drivers

1.Sealed cabinet is the way to go.

YES, or a tapered well-damped TL (TBD)

2.Both the FR and woofer to be flush mounted ?

YES - especially the mid-tweeter, it makes a big difference

3.Dagger cone of 1.1L,Total cabinet of 24L

YES, Dagger volume not so critical (1L to 3L ok)

4.Simple bracing is sufficient,horizontally

YES

5.The cabinet will have a butyl rubber based damping material on all internal surfaces if I can procure it,else I will go with tar sheets (but tar sheets degrade over time)

YES, butyl rubber sheets or bitumin/tar only needed if walls have ringing issue

6.Eggshell foam for lining the cabinet.

YES, alternatively, use melamine foam blocks ($5 for bag of 100)

7.how do I stuff the dagger cone?I remember reading to use fibreglass.Any alternatives to it?

Progressively more dense towards vertex, loose and leave 1in open space directly behind driver, line 1st 2in in inside dagger with felt or melamine foam to prevent direct back reflections. Fibeglass, rockwool, polyfill, etc all work.

8.Gaskets to be used everywhere.

YES

9.Roundovers of the front face dont matter acoustically?

YES, they help but really like 2in radius to be really effective. I roundover with 12mm radius mostly for looks.

10.X prefers the Passive crossovers(and so do I since it provides a more clean audiochain),but, what would one gain with using MiniDSP?I will provide multiple binding posts so that the mini DSP option is always available.

Good idea on multiple binding posts.

11.The woofer is on the top and FR at the bottom(ie the cabinet is flipped over)

Yes for time alignment

12.The full range will be centered for better looks compared to the offset.

YES, and it makes it easy to place left or right. Diffraction is a little less with offset but looks "funny".

13.R1 in the crossover will be lowered for the TC9FD18-08 to 2.2R or 1R.

Listen and measure, YMMV. 2R sounds about right

14.12GA wire for wiring.

Internally I use 16ga stranded, but if you have 12ga for woofers that is fine. Midtweet probably only needs 18ga. Use real stranded copper not copper coated aluminum. Externally I used 12ga stranded. Recently I found soft copper silicone insulation wire used for RC car batteries/motors very good for internal speaker/amp wiring. Designed for high current.

15.The FR and woofer will be provided with chamfers on the mounting baffle,on the back.

YES, this is important and good to do.

Good luck!

you are from mysore? great.
i am from bangalore. very recently i finished my build. you can contact me for anything.
i have also provided provision for bi-amping. i have tried with dayton dsp408 with harsch xover at 400hz and 600hz
both sounded good.
i have collected all parts for passive and would build it in few days.

Somebody’s been going through all my “FAST” threads and adding “WAW” to them. I hate the WAW acronym. Does that seem right that long-standing thread titles get renamed per fashion?

Not right.

I also hate the acronym WAW...

FAST had been used for so long, and it stuck in my mind. The new term doesn't mean anything to me, and I wonder why we should be "forced" to use it now... just to be politically correct? Has never been my thing! :)

I mean, the title of this forum is "Full Range".... not "Wide Band."
How come it is still ok to say "Full Range", but not FAST ????

Now, it just adds confusion to use WAW.

FAST should still be in use, since it is in this section of the forum.
And I won't stop myself from using it anytime soon .....

Agreed! Don't really like FAST, but dislike WAW even more. Those that designate all these acronyms and then decide they don't like them anymore should just deal with it and not go around and change other threads.

Why not FAW or Fullrange Assisted Woofer, but nothing sounds as good as FAST. The naming of acronyms is actually based on the desirable sound of the pronounced acronym, vs the technical accuracy of the acronym. That is, you start with the pronounced acronym, then you search for approximate technical words that fit. Not the other way around. It is like writing music/lyrics. You write the melody first, then the words come.

The words can't be totally far off and wacky, and I would argue that Fullrange Assisted Subwoofer Technology is not far off technically.

Indeed!
I will be coming to bangalore to gather materials for the build, hopefully I could drop by to take a look at your setup.

WAF would seem better but that's already in use. :)

submitted for your approval (cue Twilight Zone music)
(spoken in Michael Rennie's voice)
we in order to avert war and the decimation of the hallowed DIY of Audio,on high, have chosen to hence forth call the creature that is a wideband and woofer as S1w so as to not give it a name and elicit never ending controversy, like there is not enough of that in audio, and return the hallowed threads to peace...

or start a poll and naming contest...got stop texting after scotch...this hobby's too serious.
