New Markaudio Drivers

Great video! The Alpair 5.2 is also very similar to these MS series $ and 6" drivers in regards to the single suspension, but doesn't have the negative camber cone.

BTW, can one really push on the cone like that without damaging it?

It's not negative camber but it is very very shallow :)

Surprisingly yes, they don't like impact and sharp objects though!

The Alpair 5.2 — pushed by the restrictions on ferro-fluid in Europe — was the 1st stab at this concept. The negative camber cone became necessary for it to work… and should have some positive HF dispersion benefits as well. The trade-off is the resonance glitch (surround?) down low.

That response glitch is something that bothers me just looking at the response of the 11ms. The big null around 4-500 hz and a big 15db response swing in the 6khz range. I would think both of those will be audible. These drivers are certainly revolutionary but I will wait for listening impressions before considering purchasing them for a planned FHXL build. I’m tempted to do a set of Pluvia 11 first just to get a benchmark and then move on from there. My only FR experience is with the original Fostex FE206 which did some things very well but had some whizzer/cone resonance issues that spoiled the show for me.

It is kinda ugly. But we’re looking at a 2D slice (the on-axis) of a 3D sound field. There is a good chance the dip is local to on-axis and fills in off axis, and the opposite with the peak.

We’ll here them soon :^)
