Aksa Lender P-MOS Hybrid Aleph (ALPHA) Amplifier

If you drop supplies to +/-18v and boost current to 2.7amps that might drive 4ohms speaker nicely. I will confirm with a simulation. Will need to switch to IXYS outputs though for the 50w dissipation per channel. Still reasonable use same CPU cooler heatsinks or larger passive radiator.

Edit: The sims show that it can work well into 3.6ohm load at +18v and -20v (asymmetric rails) and 2.8amps for about 48w and 55w dissipation on the two MOSFETs. Set R131 to 0.22R and R132 to 0.1R. Pretty good low distortion performance out to 21wrms for even 3.6ohm load.

I was able to sneak in a little time over the last few days to get my heatsinks drilled and tapped, mount the boards, mosfets and start wiring the amp up to measure and first sounds.

Almost done, hopefully I can wrap it up in the next few days. If all goes well at that point, I'll start working on the final chassis.... :D

X, et all:
Is there a post or two that discusses what voltages I should see and where, etc.?

Should I short the inputs when I check for output off set?

Thanks!
Gable

It is the cheaper KEF Q100.

When it went on sale it was a sales failure. I guess for two reasons:

* The coaxial speaker suspension is very rigid -> it lacks bass in the first hours -> sounds very bad. They need very long burned. Compulsive buyers had to return them quickly

* It need watts, more than the amplifiers with what they recommended.

In addition, having the front bass-reflex placement is much less problematic. I have reduced the diameter with a little funky paper (hidden from view by the grid).

With my cheap modifications the sound is much better than the original.

It costed me €398, shipping included. Now you can get them for $299 on Amazon.com

Each coxial speaker (without the box) costed more than $130. They stopped selling them without verifying that they were to be repaired because some started to build their own boxes and filters with them.

Here I have explained my modifications in some posts:

Hi all, have powered up both channels, one at a time, and I am not quite sure of the offset results. Connected to a temporary supply with 25V rails with 22000uf on each rail. Current approx 1.7A.
With shorted input to ground, meter on mV DC, no loudspeaker connected the meter dances continually between approx -25mV to +25mV.
Removing the short on the input and with DVM set to AC volts the output shows approx 26V when the input is touched with fingers and shows 0mV when finger removed, so it is certainly amplifying.
Adjusting the pot for offset appears to make no difference. Should I have a load connected to check offset? Both channels behave the same.

Beautiful open frame design Pcgab! Very tidy and organized cables.

Just look at DC voltage through R131 when you flip the switch. Should be about 0.61vdc within 2 seconds. If >1v kill power and debug. You can short audio input or simply not connect it and I got same answer. About 0mV to 2mV hot or cold or anywhere in between. It was as they say, “brain dead simple.”

0.61v over 0.47ohms is 1.3amps. Interestingly, with 0.33R it was almost the same voltage.

Of course, test one channel at a time. Verify correct polarity. +ve on right side with audio input on top.

It should not dance around with or without load. What is AC volt reading at output with input grounded?

If DC offset is 25mV and no AC from oscillation, connect a test speaker and check for sound. What is Vdc across R131? What is Vac across R131 and R132?

Hi X, thanks for the reply.
V DC across R131=0.584
V AC across R131 = 1mV
V AC across R132 = 1mV
V AC at output =2mV.
I have not yet connected an audio input or loudspeaker. Wiring is untidy, so may be oscillation.
Thanks for your assistance.
Regards
Alan

ISO. With foobar2000, J River Media Center 23 64 bits...

I only listen very good records. Always I search EMOTION.

Very few SACD are well made, specially with modern/popular music. Japanese SACD with all Rolling Stones or Credence Clearwater Revival sound better than vinyl.

SACD has glorious sound with new live records in DSD, without PCM edition in the studio. LIVE. How many SACD? Very very few.

The digital many times are 16/44 -> 24/96 and the sound is much worse than the very good vinyl rip. A fraud. Instead of working with the analog/digital master they do it directly from the CD.

At the end it is always the same: the quick benefit comes before the product quality, the work well done.

My heart/ear wants the ALPHA but my brain say me it is not a good idea. It took me a few years to get the current sound despite the incredible very noisy electrical network that I suffer in home. And in the air too, with "tons" or RF/EMI.

With a class AB ALPHA with the same harmonic profile I did not doubt for a second. H2 predominance (with SS, no tubes) is my choice without any doubt. With very good and clean PSU off course. Pinocchio and I agree on its importance (very clean PSU).

Measured one channel at a time, across R131 (0.33r MRA5). Each channel measured 0.177v.

Inputs are not connected, outputs are, didn't measure offset as yet.

Sorry to hear that. At least it wasn’t the other way around and puff of magic smoke was avoided. What is voltage at gate of p channel MOSFET relative to Drain or -ve rail (pin 2)?

Is your R108 at 47ohms per schematic and not 470ohms per error on BOM?
