You truncate, I tested it.

As my example shows, truncate and round make a difference as the negative of a signal is not always mapped to the same state of the DAC ladder (ladders swapped) as the positive signal. (A serious lack of symmetry 😉 )

Yes, the difference is at most the magnitude of the last bit. I agree that for listening this is probably not of importance.
But you miss the marketing terms "bit perfect" and "32-bit input". 😀

As most here probably already know, I don't really care about marketing crap 🙂

OK but getting serious again, the missing features make it harder to put the DAM-ladder, with all of it bits, in a predefined state without fiddling around with several filters and tweaked signals.

One day when I don't have anything else to do, I might look into perfecting a couple of details...

But then is it worth the effort, first I have to decide if I just want to round, then should it be towards zero, and/or should I add dither, and if, what kind of dither, should I use shaped dither.... And whatever I do it need to be tested across a growing family of DAC products....

Or maybe just go all the way and expand to 32 real bits in the R-2R networks, then I have a marketing advantage....

In a dual-mono setup for 300 ohm headphones, should I connect the positive buffered outputs of all four channels to the 4-pin XLR or is there a better option, e.g. raw + additional buffering? An electrical view into how the connection should be done would be very helpful and greatly appreciated!

I just want repair my 1541 dac, you have tried to teach my method before, but to no avail, and now with Method 2, but contact your nine days, you have not answered my! How in the end, you decide to return have been avoided? As a supplier, sales support and commitment equivalent to a brand's life
 
Test Build

Just finished my first build, with one dam1021 SE. Sounds like a good improvement to my laptop‘s built-in dac & amp. 🙂

The enclosure still hasn't arrived... hard to count on a $20 case with CNC included... will post again when I put both dam1021 into the case.

@soekris Just saw your post early 2016 on a potential add-on buffer board for dam1021, sounds very exciting since I plan on using this mostly with headphones directly! Is it still a planned product? Thanks!

Internal Volume Control

Hi,

I tried the internal volume through the uManager but it seems the volume can be set (verified using "set" command) but there is no effect to the actual volume output.

I tried:

"set volume = -20"
"set volume = fixed -20"

and in both cases the selected volume (-20) is displayed by the "set" command but there is no change in the output level. I also tried exiting uManager and that did nothing as well.

I am using the raw output so I'm not sure if that's the reason but since the vol is digital it should work ...

It's probably something simple so any pointers are most welcome! Thanks.

Inside umanager (after +++), "set volume =", defines the attenuation to be applied after power up.
Out of umanager (after "exit" in umanager), V-24 (V-3 etc) sets the current actual playback attenuation (aka "volume").

Yes - this could have been made much more user friendly I believe. There should also be a "help" command outside of umanager I think.

In balanced dual mono mode, should I connect both the hot and cold wires of each buffered channel output to the headphone plug? Would this introduce any problem compared to just using the hot signals? Would it decrease the output impedance and increase drive power?

Has anyone been able to update DAM1021 Firmware using MAC OSX?
I've read on another site this may not be possible.
I'm using an Aten UC-232A usb to serial cable from Mac mini to J10 on the DAC. I get a "connection" message (ZOC7) for the cable, but nothing when I switch on the DAC...and no access to U-Manager.
If someone has had success, I would be immensely greatfull if you could share the details of the software and commands.....otherwise I will need to borrow a Windows machine.
