A way to avoid the Linux partition surgery in the first couple steps is to plug the USB stick into a Windows or Mac which should show the FAT32 boot partition. Create a file named ssh in this partition.
Remember, Stretch Lite does not ship with ssh enabled!

I'm thinking of something like the Raspotify addon I did recently - a few simple commands and it seemed to install itself

One other item is that Stretch Lite also ships with the new hashed network interface names and not good old eth0 and wlan0.
The cmd below from STEP 2 adds a setting that reverts to the familiar names. Or manually edit /boot/cmdline.txt

I somehow not getting any sounds on beta6 although the interface looks fine. The duration counter is increasing & etc but just no sound.
I use an USB LG HiFi+ which was detected as HM for runeaudio or volumio. I choose USB Audio device as there is no "HM" in the drop down menu.
What else I can do?

Go into MPD SETTINGS, set Audio output to "USB audio device" and then APPLY.
