Salas DCG3 preamp (line & headphone)

The now BF256B (J3) batch in Tea's hands is too strong for 4-5mA correct Id in circuit when R3=150R. Expect to find 220R R3 in his parts set.

Who have own J3s check they give 4-5mA with 150R using the following test circuit. If not any of them do, change your R3 value accordingly.

I tested 6 BF256B from Mouser at 16.5V w/a 150 ohm resistor. Best I could do was one at 5.1ma and one at 5.3ma. Most were 5.8-6ma.

Iam I OK at 5.1 and 5.3ma? I know a resistor swap to 170-180ish ohms would be ideal but I don't have any on hand.

Wow. I did not know about this project. It is great to know about it.
I used Salas SSLV to power preamp section in my amp. I compared 2xlm329 to 7 Leds as Vref to get ~ -/+15V. LEDs are definitely better: more clear and transparent than zeners. Zeners missed heights.
To build this Vref I simply glued LEDs togeter :) Did not know about such LEDs ladder existence.
Salas can you tell what is the part number/name for those "LEDs ladder" that used in this DCG3?

Thanks Salas.

Are you saying my BF256b should be better matched (they are 5.1ma/5.3ma) or just they need to operate at a lower current?

I have had a good few hours listening to my DCG3 pre driving a Colin Wonfor designed SECA home built power amp through PMC speakers. Can there really be any more information on cd! I thought that my valve pre was revealing but the DCG3 seems to be extracting more but not in an in your face way. And dynamic!
I need to sort out a suitable chassis for it. An order to Modushop is due.

Nice that you like it :)

Stable

I just checked my own for offset and bias after it spent a couple of months on the rack. Everything measures the same as in the day it was put together. All components look pristine also. (I opened it anyway with the excuse to add an X2 interference suppression capacitor across the mains power switch that I was left without any back then and I had later bought some as it is generally good practice to have one there).

Jesper, I see you are cooking with ZenMod everyday...

Well... Yes you see, this little amp. I am cooking on now i find very interessting.
I need to learn more about powersupplies, as i learned from youre dcg3 + dcstb that it gives something special to my ears with dualpsus.

So right now, i have been fiddeling with Duncans psudesigner... Just to test different setups.

I am waiting for some raw PCB, so second AlephJ Mimi can sing :eguitar::note::note:

Nice headphones. I see you have started a collection!

I was missing an affordable closed back that had to have big over the ear cups and velour pads. Not many such models around so I went with that Beyer 770 studio classic.
For notable isolation vs my open ones plus capable of fun sounds and long time comfort like for when watching movies on Kodi.
Not musically accurate they are, thinned out upper mids response with a a high treble peak too. More like bright than harsh.
But with big deep bass in counterpoint and a generally clean from ringing response plus conveying some good sense of imaging which is rare in closed backs.
Still made in Germany by the way. Noticeably cheaper plastics and heavier stiffer cable than any comparably priced AKG though.

J is one its tone I like. Has SE output with dynamic current source for better efficiency. I believe you will like it too. Good luck with it. By the way keep in mind that for whenever you get curious about push pull lateral Mosfets topology to taste in simple high bias small amplifier again, your rails and sinks fit like gloves Juma's Cubie2 working specs also.

Salas, I read something in the BOM(post 1) about shorting out various LEDs in order to get lower voltages from your DCSTB supply.

So I have a couple of questions:

1) What would I have to do to get +-12VDC from the supply? Would I short out 3 of the 10 LEDs of the Kingbright DCs per side or would it make more sense to skip the Kingbrights and just use seven 5mm red LEDs per side?

2) Would a 24V CT transformer supply enough voltage to get +-12VDC on the outputs?

Thanks!

We have a pulse...

Last night I got my DCG3 board energised and everything seemed to be ok. I chose 7,5 ohm bias resistors from Tea's set and my bias was running at 170mA after 20 min test drive. Heatsinks were 43 C on the DCG3 and 47 C on the DCSTB after 20 min without top cover.
