Slewmaster - CFA vs. VFA "Rumble"

I checked on PCBway and their price is good but all I could find was DHL shipping and that was twice the cost of the boards. Do you know if there is a way to select a cheaper shipping method?

Thanks, Terry

hello Terry, I see that it has a option for "cheaper method" 🙂

Regards
Juan

I have the Krypton ND ready for testing. I will try testing the IPS stand alone first and then hook it up to the the OPS.

Terry,

Are you adding solder to the traces on the board?
Are those pre production boads?

I guess you have a stock of the all the parts handy
to build. Not bad.

Slewmaster's

If you check out the Wiki List you'll see the "wire" guys.
They seem pretty organized and are putting things in
all the right places. Anything I can do to help while
I can? I've been bouncing around here for a little bit
but still not sure how to build one of these.

Where to get sub assemblies etc. Or do I just get the
honey badger and change the amp board?

Hi Thimios,

I must have built this while you were sleeping. That is the only thing that can explain me finishing before you. 😉 I did test it stand-alone but alas, the day is done here so you know have 12 hours to complete yours and test with the OPS before me. 😀

Kindhornman,

I will no longer be answering any more questions about the sound of an amp. Any of you guys who want to know how an amp sounds can either build it yourself or ask someone you trust to say what you want to hear. I will also not be answering questions about the existence of Santa or the Easter Bunny. I will no longer mess with anyone's heart felt beliefs.

Yes I add solder to all the traces. I etched the boards.

I do have a pretty large supply of parts now. I used to order parts as needed and it seemed like I would always forget one or two parts and have to pay extra shipping fees to get them. So, I started ordering extra parts with every order. It helps that OS tends to use similar values in his designs. I do have a supply of all the basic values in 1/4w resistors and a large variety of film caps and MLCC caps. It adds to my enjoyment of the hobby.

Terry,
I was just teasing you there. I understand you don't notice any differences between the different input sections. though I will comment that OS surely has noticed a difference between the VFA and CFA versions for bass and high end. I see you are just having fun, but not sure I would ever do that just to do it, but that is just me. You have learned much since the beginning of the thread and you seems to have a handle on what you need to do to make all the different topologies work, I am impressed with that. I have enough different amps around for myself that I am interested in finishing one of these amps for personal use and a design that incorporates much of what has been done and then some in an all in one board, not what everyone else is after. I still don't understand OS's desire for a JC Parasound, they really are mediocre sounding amps as far as I am concerned, To many corners cut for the price point. I have three of their amps and only have them because I was offered them at cost for a show many years ago. Not impressed. If OS wants to recreate something a Sumo amp would be nice, they sounded much better than the Parasound.

1. Parasound fetish - not curls design , but the build quality. My neighbor
who owns the parasound /paradigm's thinks the slew is better (he's a owner ?).
The pass labs and emotiva amps are this same enviable build quality.

2. This is why I have so many IPS's , I'm sure any critic can't hate them all.
I have to listen to a wide range of source to really get a "feel" for an amps
SQ. I'm giving the kypton C a month now.

Terry , that layout looks smashing in real life. That must be the most
photogenic of all the ips's - the alignment is killer.

Two things to note - It's hard to feedback test a CFA without an OPS ,
nearly impossible to do right - the feedback network needs the low Z
of a real OPS to work correctly.
This is why I have the "beech" amp with junk 3 pair outputs.

If you drive it hard for a test - R12/13- 16/17 should be >1/2W- 1, preferably.

R4/7 can increase/decrease VAS current , as can R18/19. Try for @ 6ma
with R24 at 25k. You can always trim down 5K for 5.3 -5.5ma.
Edit - Match Q1 and 2 (most critical pair).

Kind,

I hear what I hear. I am the only person I know of who has two identical pairs of Slewmasters OPS . Everyone else is either comparing from memory or comparing using two different OPS. At the end of the day, none of it matters because I have no desire to influence anyone on the issue. I was enjoying sharing my experiences with those who cared to hear and I have shared my troubles and victories in hopes it would help another layman like myself to better enjoy the hobby and maybe avoid some of errors I may have made.

Hi OS,

Yes, I knew the CFA feedback wouldn't work quite right like this. I was mainly looking to make sure I didn't have any errors before I hooked it up to the OPS. I had already replaced those resistors with 1w before I tested. I just didn't take another picture. I'll attach a pair of 5P OPS in the morning. I installed 10k trimmers and I think I need to change those to 25k. I guess I misunderstood your intent in the schematic.

Terry or OS,
If you do install the higher wattage resistors do you just leave them in when you are done testing or do you revert to the 1/4 watt resistors and if you do, why?

Terry I appreciate that you are actually comparing two input sections with the identical output section, that would be the only way to make a real comparison in an AB test. I really do believe that different people hear and tune into different aspects of sound, some may never notice something that someone else clues into immediately. But if you or anyone else is happy with what they have then that is all that is important. In the end it is about the music, isn't it!

Just noticed , your R24 is a 10K trimmer. It says "50K 10T" over R24
on the schema .... I just set 10k to adjust VAS I.

Your 10K would work if you adjust R25 to what ever will center
the VAS I to my mentioned 5.5ma. You would just have less range
in adjustment.
I used 50K there to compensate for any input pair current - a
large >3ma range.
