Oh, I meant the 3 from Barley that had to be renamed from .asc.
I only listened to the first set for a second or two, I noticed the voting was closed, so I wasn't sure if everyone was still trying those or not.
Edit: From the first set, I think I'd go with B for sounding the most neutral, but I admit I only downloaded a full set from 1 track.
A is the 5MR450NDY - one of my favorite drivers for a FAST implementation. It can get very loud and still sound super clean.
I have two 'new in box' 1354s waiting for cabinets.
At 5.25" they are just outside the boundary for this competition but
they sure worked well in the 36" Cornucopya.

Yeah, I rather like that one after a few more listens.
I hate to say it, but I bet that driver would make a great midrange in a 3 way with a nice high crossover point mid-tweet.

That driver is in fact technically a pro audio mid range (hence the MR) - it just happens to reach 15kHz so I use it as a full range as I can't hear much above 15kHz. Many PA setups don't really aim for above 15kHz really.
I don't have a clue what driver is any of the z's but on headphone I like z3 most. z1 treble is a bit much and flat/sharp on my headphones, but I didn't compare to original track.
Vote Godzilla's Un-Obtanium Drivers
My vote for preferred sound from Godzilla's Un-Obtanium Drivers as attached txt file, a guess matching files to drivers based on the responses xrk971 released is there too.
Was fun thanks Godzilla and xrk971.

.....Have fun... 🙂
I will post the identities in a few days, let's say by 18:00GMT March 22, 2015.
😀 . knock knock . . . . . 😴
No problem at all X 🙂 you have really done a lot of work, thanks.
I was trying to be witty in that my imagination said okay we just past a Saturday night where it's a human right to get hammered once in a while, therefor the zzz and big grin icons.

I don't know if anyone cares anymore, but I just downloaded the samples on page 1 and added them all to a playlist, then started removing the ones that I liked the least. Finally I was left with only E and G, but couldn't decide which one was better. I thought it was quite interesting to see they were almost the same driver and most people didn't think either of them was the best.
I don't have any experience with any of these drivers and I didn't look at what is what before listening. I didn't read through the rest of the thread either, so I don't know what other people think either.

I think Anthony Bisset also picked E&G after B. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/270614-subjective-blind-comparison-3in-5in-full-range-drivers-4.html#post4243215
E and G were the ones that surprised me most. Looking at the Datasheets I would have thought they would have been at the top of my list, but subjectively they were at the bottom!
There's just something about them (like they sound like they are playing at the end of a drain pipe) which I don't like. It's not in your face and quite possibly something that a lot of people wouldn't pick up on, but really really disagrees with my ears 🙂
I'm always very sceptical when I see people saying things like "the difference was like day and night" but for me it was like that with these two drivers. I'm definitely in the minority though, because whilst most people didn't pick them as a favorite they didn't pick them as the worst like I did, pretty sure I saw quite a few comments that rated them close to the top two!
I think that this fits with my theory that some people are more sensitive to certain shortcomings than others, and what some people might not even notice, they will find terrible. After all there are so many different drivers and designs, I'm sure that wouldn't happen if everyone was the same 🙂
Tony.

Thanks for you comments on E & G Wintermute. Very interesting that you thought they sounded like playing through drain pipes!
One thing that this listening test doesn't show is the capability for bass and low mids. That had to be removed in order to do this comparison with any semblance of apples to apples comparison.
Both E & G, and I think probably F have 4mm of xmax and a moderate Qts that allows them to really sound full and rich all on their own in a bass reflex, MLTL, and I know, an XKi. With that said, the TC9FD and 3FE22 both can play surprisingly low in a TQWT-MLTL like a Karlsonator scaled to 0.4x. In this case, a high Qts seems to do the trick to allow deeper bass extension than the 120Hz fs would indicate. Also, aligbments like a DCR can also extract very clean low distortion bass down to 55Hz from the TC9FD at moderate near field listening levels. In a similar way, the PS95-8 has a higher Qts and I think it may actually be a drop in replacement for the TC9FD in many cases.

What if, say, a microphone was stuck in front of a pair of ridiculously priced audiophile speakers and the sound emanating from them recorded and then fed to a pair of bargain priced drivers. Would the final sound, sound like an expensive pair of speakers or the latter? Here is test track number one for cases A through G. I suggest adding all tracks to a playlist so you can quickly go between them to do A/B'ing.
This is a long thread and I've not read much of it, so if the above is a repeat, I'm sorry.
It always sounds like the rate-limiting device. Say your cheapo driver drops off after 5kHz, then you have no playback past that...
After all there are so many different drivers and designs, I'm sure that wouldn't happen if everyone was the same 🙂
Tony.
You're sure about that? Time is a well controlled and accepted concept yet look at how many different watches there are! 😀
What about a reverse of the above, sound from inexpensive speakers played back through audiophile grade speakers? What if, say, a microphone was stuck in front of a pair of ridiculously priced audiophile speakers and the sound emanating from them recorded and then fed to a pair of bargain priced drivers. Would the final sound, sound like an expensive pair of speakers or the latter?

Perhaps I'm missing something, how can you critique a speaker listening to it through another speaker?

You can compare different speakers on the (your) same listening system. Your second proposal would give a better view on things. Like I said before in this thread. One might wonder if this test says more about your own system than the drivers being tested.
