Why are you testing the Radio Shack 40-1197, the NSB, and the 69 cent wonders?
All of the drivers are long ago out of production and currently not available for sale from suppliers. The only availability would be from individuals. Seems to me to be a waste of effort to even consider a new project with any of those drivers.

You have a point about lack of availability. Testing them because Godzilla provided them - maybe just for fun.
Maybe throw the unavailable drivers out as a 3rd set that stands alone with its respective 2 songs rather than mix it up with everything else? Don't name them but they can certainly add to the fun and people might learn something about preferences.
And that's a lot of drivers to test and record! Thanks for doing this!

I agree with Jim Griffin. It would be a real shame that someone would discover their favourite driver here and discover it's long been out of production. Maybe just include them, but named (as opposed to blind).
Well if they are included and even of named, someone may still find that they like the sound. But at least they won't pick one they like best from the blind test.
the black Kevlar "TG9" (need to come up with a name for this driver)
I'd vote for "TYPY03"...
Tymphany TYPY03W06O0111 3-1/2" Full Range Driver
Odd test indeed IMo.
Playback through one's Computer gear/setup ?
Perhaps even the Contraption's 'multimedia' speakers?
Auditioning the Sounds of a speaker through ANOTHER speaker !?
Not one of the Brightest notions .. ever!

That's why I said to use high quality headphones. There is a difference between drivers that will be apparent if you listen and concentrate as hundreds of other people have. Despite your opinion that this is not a bright notion, the votes ended up with a significant (factor of ~3x) preference for drivers that have an intrinsically flat response. It is for fun but I think a lot of people got to listen to the sound of a lot of different drivers in the identical setup - something that they otherwise would not get to try. Even in a listening or audition room at HiFi store - the cabinets for different drivers are different. Here, the cabinet/baffle are identical, the electronics are identical, the source is identical, the recording equipment is identical. How many other tests have you seen where this many drivers are presented under identical conditions for everything, except the driver?
Godzilla's Un-Obtanium Drivers
For fun, I am posting the sound clips for the three drivers that Godzilla provided me that are no longer commercially available: the "No Stinkin' Badges" (NSB), the 69 Cent Wonders, and the Radio Shack 40-1197. You know that it is just these 3 drivers, but I will leave the identity of the clips "blind" so you can have some fun trying to discern the differences. I was actually quite impressed by how well some of these sounded considering one was under $1 in cost.
They will be labeled Z1, Z2, and Z3 (for GodZilla's drivers). The same 3 sound clips as before but this time the difference is that the recording was done at 96kHz and 24bits .wav file. This was then processed in Audacity to set the amplitude of the peak at -0.5dB and then rendered with 48kHz sampling mp3 at 320kbit/sec stream. Again, keep in mind that this is a stereo recording of the right channel playing in mono.
Change the .ASC extension to .MP3 in order to listen.
Have fun... 🙂
I will post the identities in a few days, let's say by 18:00GMT March 22, 2015.

Godzilla's Un-Obtanium Drivers - bonus sound clips
I decided to add a vocal that I like and use a lot for a reference, and some classical, and a lute/guitar per Bob Brine's request.

Jim, those are the drivers along with a shipload of others that us old boys have sitting on the shelves just dying to be used. Them's the ones I'd like to see in these contests. 🙂
I'd like to send X a bunch of the ones I have. I might win these contests with drivers that were never available to the public. Some you might know, some you might not hear of in the diyWorld, OEM stuff, not kidding.
Hey X, did you miss me? 😀
Cal,
I am a bit saturated with drivers now, but for you my friend... you can send me up to three sets to test. The requirement though is that I get to keep whatever you send me to test for my trouble. 🙂 So don't send me drivers that are one of a kind. You being a speakerholic and all, I would imagine you might have a few extras of something lying around...
Godzilla asked for his drivers back, and that is OK, but I was under the impression initially that I would get to keep them, as all of the other submissions so far have been that way, including the pricey Scan Speak 10F/8424's.
Of course I missed you... 😀

Feedback....
Thanks X, have listened "Godzilla's Un-Obtanium Drivers" and the "bonus sound clips" thru speakers, plan later will disappear into
world.
You really raised sound stream quality
, and one of them drivers not bad at all.
haven't got the three bonus sound clips myself so miss a reference point, is those possible to upload.

Vielleicht nicht unobtanium, I like new music too and 3 speakerformat is quick🙂

I'm looking forward to the 1197 ...
TS Params for Godxilla's Un-Obtainium
These measured nicely in DATS v2:
- Radio Shack 40-1197 (FE103 copy)
- 69 cent wonders
- NSB (no stinkin' badges)
Here are the measured XO settings for the above drivers in the XKi FAST system used for the sound recordings. Note that mic is placed 0.5 m away in between driver and bass port so that effective angle to full range is about 10 deg off-axis:
40-1197 (this is quite impressive, and the bezel construction, basket shape, magnet size, inverted surround, paper cone materials , etc resemble another certain newer driver that was no where near as smooth):
69 Cent Wonder:

Radio Shack 40-1197 is a very nice driver
Is it true that this driver is still available for purchase? That price is pretty steep - bordering on maybe half the price of B80 or 10F territory. Certainly almost up there with FF105WK, but arguably smoother than the newer FF105WK! I have to give my hats off to Radio Shack for making, what I think, is a superior copy of an FE103. Not sure if FE103 would be free of zinger peaks that ring like crazy in the 7kHz to 10kHz range.
Response at 0.5m, gated 4ms:
Harmonic Distortion at low drive level of 0.71 volts and 0.5m away:
Outstanding Impulse Response:

Before round 1 gets completely buried I would like to demonstrate variations of presentation and equalization.
Here is example using IR response of TC9FD Sys convolved with left and right channels of Clip3. File is mp3, so change .asc to mp3 for a listen.
