Hey, I'm wondering. Did you guys listen to the clips by the order of A to G, or randomly, or jumping this to that by interest, or in other ways?
I'm thinking the effect of short term memory when we're doing the comparison.
It could be the case we overrate the latter when it sidesteps the obvious drawback of the previous one, but it's not enough to say which is actually better.
In order, but the clips are so short I don't see how memory would be an issue. There's no time limit so you're free to listen as many times as you want for as long as you want. I don't even listen to the clips all the way through. I find the parts that relate to one particular aspect and then cycle through all the drivers, find another area of focus and repeat...
Bit the system recorded is a 2-way.

I was referring to the upper frequencies.
Let me add I'm not a devotee either way. To paraphrase Olivier from Spartacus "I like both snails AND oysters." 😀

Hi CLS, I listened sequentially A to G, took notes on each, and then went back and jumped between different ones to make sure I still felt the same way. Swapping between worst rated and the others, then swapping between the ones I didn't elminate. Only two of the drivers I really strongly disliked. One was marginal. one was OK except for a bit too much top end for my liking. The other three were pretty close, these were the ones that I spent the most time deciding on.
Looking at the poll I'm now questioning my choices!!

Humans don't easily compare multiple choices. I went through all of them in sequence (A to G), eliminated the obvious ones I didn't like to give me a short list of candidates. From a re-run through the short list I had a favourite. I then compared that favourite with each survivor, trying each time to beat it (if it did, use the better one as the benchmark and go through them all again). It's harder to hear an upgrade than it is to notice a downgrade. So once I had a candidate winner I would listen to it then listen to one of the short listed drivers, then return to the candidate winner to reset my short term memory by listening to it again followed by the next short listed one.
I would suggest that you all listen from G to A also and see how that goes... does it affect your preference?
I still have to find an amp and usb dac - an old pair of Superlux 381F buds with ill fitting tips removed all semblance of bass

My choice is not the favorite either 🙂 Who knows, maybe the favorite will change over the next few days.
I listened A to G, then G to A, then randomly. Then I started eliminating drivers, some of which were pretty awful, I thought. Finally got down to 3, then did more listening. Got down to 2, more listening and picked the favorite.
I listened both on the main system and headphones. Main system was not as revealing. You would expect that because the effect of your room is overlaid on the recorded sound. Headphones were much better. I had on hand the reliable and comparatively neutral AKG K240 Studio headphones. Downmixing to mono also helped.
Casted my vote. This thread is aptly titled, the poll results show a varied preference by listeners with a couple of drivers getting ahead but not by a big margin. It's tempting to choose the "bright" sounding ones as they give impression of producing more details, but after listening to the tracks several times I picked the one which for me has the better tonal balance.

Freddi,
Why don't you plug the headphones directly into the computer without USB DAC? Or listen to them on your best reference 2-way K15 with K-tube tweeter.
I take it you haven't voted yet?

I did a similar thing by listening to all tracks but jumping around randomly at first, then identify which at first guess was most agreeable to my ears then used that to one by one do an A/B via a playlist. This was used to eliminate drivers and the winner would then go on to face off the next one in another A/B. While A/B testing I would note which ones were close calls. When A/B'ing I would pick certain parts to test for certain things. Finally, after the finalists were picked this way (top three), I did a final listening all the way through for each track with each driver to settle on the overall favorite. Reversing the listed order for me would not have helped as I randomized them initially so that I could not easily remember which ones they were as I made the tracks.
Has it gone through a weekend? That might be worthwhile as some people only check the forum once a week on the weekend.
Good point, wait till Fri and then try to keep the thread near the top (or at least not off the bottom) over the weekend.
That's when I'll have time to listen ...
Can't believe you guys have B and D as leading candidates. Are you even listening, or are you just pressing at random or looking at what others voted?
And A on third place?! The worst driver of the bunch! Sibliance and HF peaks through the roof and coloured and muddled mids.
C all the way! 😛

Even I voted on this one. Started by giving A (only because its first in the list) an arbitrary 5/10 score and then listened to each in turn and scored each accordingly against this one. There were a couple of real duds SQ wise and one favourite 🙂
You voted C then? (sorry to be dense).
Who, me 😀 I voted yesterday morning.
Ok. Thought you might be replying to my post.
BTW I really can't see any point in making a big secret out of the choices of individual users. People will be able to see the preliminary results anyway.
Democracy as such is deeply flawed anyway. ;-)
What is important is not to know the make of the drivers.

Ok, here is where the rallying and campaigning for one's favorite candidate starts. Almost "Survivor-like". 🙂
Seriously, let's not try to sway votes because they are visibly going one way or another. It may mean that people *enjoy* peaks and coloration if that is indeed the case with A. I hope you did not run a spectrum on the clip to enable you to say it is full of HF peaks and muddled mids.
i wonder if results would be different if the poll percentages where not displayed and members kept quiet until it was all done.
I think we have to keep in mind the lesson of the Pepsi Challenge. Something that is good in very small doses quickly becomes tiring in larger quantities.
People are generally very bad at ascertaining what they will tire of in the long run, unless they are experienced in the particular field.
