Recommendation of 8-Inch Woofer + Real Tweeter

Brazilian speakers:

EROS
ARLEN
BRAVOX
KEYBASS
MAGNUM
NOVIK
OVERSOUND

Initially the NOVIK and OVERSOUND caught my attention. But it was in EROS site that I found this driver.

These are the brands I found. I am not mentioning JBL/Selenium or Hinor for the obvious reasons...
I also found out that Pioneer does loudspeakers here but only for the automotive market. Same for Sony, etc. These I won't count for now.

Oi Vey! Does anyone in Brazil listen to anything except 4 ohm PA and car speakers? You'll all be deaf by the time you're 30. 😀

Surely you can dig up a regular 8 ohm 8" paper bass driver? Even off a second hand speaker with blown tweeters or something.

Hm, well. I guess concerning brazilian speaker manufacturers it's all a no go. I will have to import, definitely. Even if I have to wait a bit more to do this, or import part by part to keep taxes down.

Shipping definitely plays a part on this. Visaton directly shipping from Germany would cost between 52 to 75 Euros (being that the lowest value, 1 part for woofer and tweeter; and the highest, the complete parts).

What do you guys think, is 75 Euros a lot? It is 103 USD.

So I am back on looking at the Silver Flute W20RC38-8 option. With tweeter Morel MDT10. I know it may be inferior to Visaton driver, but importing from USA will definitely keep shipping costs down.

The only PA speakers that have manageable properties are Eminence Alpha and Beta 8 IMO. Low Qts, 8 ohms and decent frequency response. Even then the high efficiency might make tweeter matching hard.

Look for second hand boxes like this:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Loads of Japanese speakers followed this pattern. Pioneer with cone tweeters for instance. Big boxes and decent if simple bass units that don't need much filtering. You can then play with tweeters and filters and damping materials.

You can improve them a lot. And save a lot of carpentry. 🙂

BTW, "Oy Vey!" is a yiddish lament. I've been around and picked up some amusing expressions. Yiddish has some amazingly funny and discreet ways of insulting people too. The bad words always begin with Sh. Schmuck, Shiksa and so on. 🙄

@Inductor,

Man, I found the Selenium 8PX (previously mentioned by you) on a budget, brand new. What do you think? 34 USD each. Is it a candidate for a bad bass, or would it be superior to what I have now?

I take that the foam vs. rubber won't be an issue in here, making my new box vented, or will it ?

I don't need a "empire building shaking bass system". In fact I even need to be careful to not upset any neighbor. I hope that when you say "doesn't deliver that much bass" is something in the lines of a concrete wall shaking sound.

Making a decision today...

I will stick with Visaton drivers!
Just found out that the tax will not be applied on top of freight. Only the declared product value.

But it will not be this month. Probably in 2 or 3 months I will order.
Meantime, I will slowly change my box and prepare everything, including the crossover.

Would like to call attention to JBL Selenium and brazilian speaker manufacturers: YOU ALL SUCK.

Usually it is intended as an amplitude diminution in the lower octaves.
It can be associated to the rising response of any speaker as you see it pictured in a FR graph.
Wall shaking or punch in the stomach, those depend on the volume the music is played. If the speakers can cope with the necessary requirements to do so.

Hi Ben,

Well, I ended up not importing the Visaton drivers.
Everything would cost me around $ 500 USD after taxes.

I will have to wait a bit more or if PartsExpress.com is shipping again to Brazil I might consider getting from them.

Also, doing business with the representative from Visaton would be a bit more complicated because they would only do this with bank orders and such.

The La Scala is spec'd at 91dB whereas the W200S is spec'd at 86dB?
The WLM LaScala uses the 4 ohm 8" W200S, AFAIK. With almost no bafflestep. But it's an 88dB driver for sure. That's actually efficient enough to not need many watts to go very loud. Say 20wpc.
W 200 S - 4 Ohm

But I'm not saying you have to use Visaton drivers at all. Any well behaved cheepie midbass will do:
80W 8in Shielded Bass Mid Range Speaker | Maplin

But I do like these 91dB Monacor HT22/8 cone tweeters which are better than the Visaton TW70 IMO. How the filter works, is the more inductance the woofer has, the more resistance you have to put in the bass shunt to stop midrange peakiness. I'd guess these KEF/Monitor Audio 8" Elac drivers are about 0.9mH. So 5.6R is possibly overdoing it, but I'm tuning by ear here. Nevertheless it sounds excellent. 😀

Being closed box, 1.5mH and 4.7uF is fine. For bassier reflex you'd probably want 1mH and 8uF. I thought I'd try high source impedance to the drivers for this build and no notches or Zobels, to use their natural rolloff and internal damping. A 90 degree BW3 filter with excellent off-axis dispersion, as it goes. I like those too. 🙂

I have a superb amplifier that I designed and built myself (well, I would say that wouldn't I!!) called TGM (on this forum somewhere) which is capable of 100W. BUT as much as it is the best I've heard I have a desire to play around with some low power tube and transistor amplifiers where 3W or so would be typical. I think I would be satisfied with overall sensitivity of 91dB for casual listening but losing 3dB off that wouldn't be enough. I think you once recommended the Eminence 8" to me and I have that in mind, but it would be nice to have more choice of 'better sounding' drivers. I can quite easily accommodate a larger box if that helps.

Hi Krafty - I hope you figure out a way forward.

I will have to wait a bit more or if PartsExpress.com is shipping again to Brazil I might consider getting from them.

I will ship to you without added charge - just whatever the USPS charges for shipping. I can order the parts then ship them to you using PayPal. It MIGHT be a lot cheaper than using whatever method Parts Express does, I know the payment forms they accept for international orders are limited. I have done this a few times for someone in the Ukraine.

Sometimes having items shipped to you from a person can be a lot less headache than trying to deal with the company for international orders, I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, I just offer it as an option for you.

I leave it up to you which form of shipping and what kind of insurance you choose, I am not sure what kind of insurance USPS offers for service to Brazil, you are welcome to look on www.USPS.com and let me know if you would like my help for this.

Hi Bigun, your last post from Jan'15 is almost a year now. Well, I haven't figured a way out, because I basically got into a leading job position that prevented me from having the time to lean over the project and make arrangements to import drivers. The step I halted was the foaming... after that, I did not have any more time to deal with it. The worst thing now is the currency spike, which now, is 1 USD for 4 BRL. Didn't vote for this president now, but there's where the situation is now, although I may resume the project in this year of 2016.

criptofur, thanks for your offering, I am considering it. You will need to email me and explain how the processes would have to be made, if I need to pay the material to you upfront; which was not clear in your message. You can charge your work, it's no problem for me. Last time I was stuck with those Visaton drivers (woofers and tweeters), now I will have to look for the same ones in Parts-Express or similar items... any recommendations? Believe me, over a year out of this I ended up even losing the whole understanding on the crossover for this project. So if they have a pre-made cross-over too, it would be nice. Or a kit. Then, yes, I may consider your offer. Thank you.
