The Weather

The "free air conditioning" allowed me to do heavy work outdoors for 10 hours straight yesterday without a break.

Ever wondered if labor ethos and geographical climate conditions are genetically linked ?

An acquaintance in the Caribbean worked a full-time night manager job at the Hilton, plus run a small food place from the afternoon till late evening 7/7, till he went all F&B a year ago.
Told me his grandfather was a captured German soldier who remained on the island after the end of ww2.

(Shell refinery at the island delivered the bulk of the jet fuel for the US fighter planes, which drew some U-boat attention to the leeward Dutch Antilles)

I would imagine that it's hard to do manual work in the heat, and generally it makes people lethargic (it does me). The advent of air-conditioning likely improved productivity in hot places. But I don't think there is a genetic link, rather there might be cultural / traditional attitudes which will be most visible in older generations (e.g. pre- air conditioning) but not with the younger generation.

I grew up in Miami. We did not have air conditioning in our house until I was in high school. None of the public schools I attended has air conditioning. Does a high school senior really want to hear about Shakespeare and Chaucer when it is 95 degrees in the classroom with 100% humidity.....no I would rather hear Jimi. I paid more attention to my Panasonic than my teacher.

I remember a few sleepless nights where it was just too hot and humid to sleep, but the heat didn't bother me near as much at 16 years old that it did later in life. For the last few years, a few hours of yard work even early in the morning, and I was useless for the rest of the day, usually taking a midafternoon nap.

There have been days here with 90+ degree temps and high humidity, which do result in some midafternoon laziness (usually cured with sugar and caffeine), but I have been able to work outside for the entire day, doing manual labor, digging, moving, lifting, planting etc.

I know the sun is on the thermometer but:

It's mid September
It's 5 in the afternoon
I live near the ocean
and we are above 49ºN

😀

Less than two weeks ago we were having 35 degree C days here, today it did not crack 17 degrees C, gloomy and overcast..

That was here yesterday. When I got in the car yesterday morning (7 AM) the temp was 41F (5C). I had real shoes on my feet for the second time since I got here. I was working outside all day. By lunch time I looked like my normal self (no shoes, no shirt). It made it up to 64F (18C).

Today's low was 45F (7C), but the wind was gone and the sun was shining....Tank top and flip flop weather.

It's cold today.......Really?????

I just spent an hour outside with a heat gun trying to thaw out that solid brick of ice that contains my heat pump. During that hour the temperature dropped from 25F (-4C) to 17F (-8C). There is a 20 MPH wind that makes the heat gun worthless. It also makes the 17 degree weather feel like zero. I gave up on the heat pump. We might see a few hours above freezing on Wednesday, but it will still be windy.

I usually go to the gym about 7 AM. It's a 5 to 10 minute drive and the heater in my car might just get warm when I get there.....I wonder if I will make it tomorrow. The weather channel says 12F (-11C) with a "feels like" temp of -4F (-20C)......What's January got in store for us......

And, where is Mr Gore now.....Hawaii?

It's just getting cranked up here now......there was a nice warm breeze today & yesterday.........soon, very soon our long awaited Summer will arrive,

I did manage to get to the gym this morning. The weather channel was wrong....it wasn't 12 degrees when I left....it was 13. The 2 year old Walmart battery in the Honda just barely had enough juice to start it. Minimal Ice on the roads.....

It is now 15 degrees, and it's not expected to get any warmer today, so I am going outside to attack the heat pump again. According to the manual, there is a "defroster" circuit board buried inside it somewhere.....I bet IT needs some defrosting. We had rain at 34 degrees for several hours yesterday before it turned to snow. The heat pump did it's job of sucking the heat out of that rain, creating a block of ice about 2 1/2 feet square. Amazingly it was still running when we got home and noticed the large ice cube. The fan was not turning (blades iced up) but the motor still tries to run. There was still some heat coming out of the vents inside the house, but the temp had dropped inside to 64 degrees.

I used to have to manually defrost my heat pump a couple times a year. I found the cap for the timer circuit that controls the defrost cycle was bad. I think it was 63V, 1000uF cap. If your heat pump is over 10 years old, check that cap. It is the largest electrolytic on the control board.

The fastest way I found to defrost the unit was to poured hot water over it, and through the coils.

My new heat pump works like a charm. Except when my NEST thermostat shorted out and blew a fuse on the 24V supply. I still haven't gotten an RMA from NEST. They make it almost impossible to return a unit for repair.

20F this morning (-7C) and not supposed to get above 27F today (-3C).

I'm glad I bought a couple extra bags of fuel pellets this year.
