What are you Watching?

Pretty good final today. Argentina definitely had their chances, still Germany were marginally the better team and what a finish! We're going to be seeing that wonder finish for years to come. Argentina will have plenty to rue: Kroos' spurned gift to Higuain, Howedes studs up challenge could easily have resulted in a straight dismissal, and the 50/50 ball between Neuer and Higuain wouldn't have been a foul 20 years ago, but should have been a yellow and a penalty in my opinion; Neuer may have won the punch, but his knee was high and his charge was reckless. One wonders what would have happened if the brackets had been arranged differently and Germany had played two 120 minute games in a row with 6 days rest. Or even if di Maria's speed had been available.

Not marginally.

(what if Germany had been able to bring all of their best players to Brazil. Schürrle and Götze are super subs and only 22/23)
Well, it was hardly a blowout was it? Any time both teams are tied after 110, with few chances for both, the difference is marginal. Higuain makes his run 1/3 of a second later he stays onside, Howedes moves his head 1cm and the header is in the net. Kroos could have easily ended the goat of the decade in regulation time if Higuain keeps his head and goes around Neuer. Still, the youth, depth, and speed of DEU saw them through; Schurrle beat three defenders to put an exquisitely weighted ball onto the chest of Gotze, who's trap and take was even better. Well worthy of winning the match.

Congratulations Germany!

That was an awesome game, and Argentina played well too.
But that German goal @ extra time was simply a beauty!

I truly enjoyed the entire FIFA tournament, with all the gods and the turnovers.
Congrats to all the World's team nations who participated; I believe 32 nations were represented in all.

That was fantastic! ...Right Mick! 🙂

I did revisit this last night ::

Indeed, it was the overall best in my memory. James Rodriguez and Robben were both wonderful in my opinion and more deserving of the Golden Ball. Truth be told, in the knockout stages, Messi only showed brief flashes of his ability, never the sustained efforts and effects that Rodriguez and Robben had on their teams.

But what a goal on which to end the tournament; beautiful, decisive, and instinctive. Here's hoping that this is just the beginning for Gotze and Schurrle.

As most South/Middle American teams, the Argentina performance is centered on/around just one key player, Messi.
The Argentina defense is marginal at best ; 2-1 against Bosnia & Herzegovina, 3-2 playing against Nigeria.

After the 1st round, to survive the next game, Argentina was forced to throw 8-9 players in front of the goal most of the time.
It's very difficult to make a goal with such a defense, the makings of boring games, but also severely limits their own chances of scoring ;
Switserland game : 1-0 (118th minute)
Belgium : 1-0 (8th minute, in defense mode for the remaining 82)
Netherlands : PK decision

Final game : 60% ball possession for Germany, a mere 2 shots on target by Argentina in 120 minutes.
The scarce few occasions that Messi out-accelerated the German defenders, he was also too fast for his own front players, which were too far behind to be near the German goal in time.

To wurm through 10 players stacked in front of an Argentina goal requires a dribbler super star equal to Messi, in top condition.
Germany doesn't have one, but modern socker is no longer won by teams that rely on a single super natural.
Hence, exit Portugal with Christiano Ronaldo, exit Colombia and James, dramatic exit Brazil without Neymar.

The current USA coach transformed the German national selection to Dutch style in '04, after the traditional German power play way could no longer keep up : WC 2006 - 3d place, WC 2010 - 3d place, WC 2014 - world champion => evolution, not revolution.
Had the Netherlands team reached the final stage instead of Argentina, they would have received a royal beating by Germany.
It's hard to loathe a world champion that plays socker the Dutch way. :clown:
(Netherlands-Germany socker rivalry is a bit similar to Argentina-Brazil, but on a level with mutual respect)
The German socker team will without doubt be an utter and total bitch in 2018.

Most amusing of this WC were the tweets and photoshop images, imo =>

I like what you said in your post. ...That's a very fair analysis (good assessment) of the current situation in the world of soccer (football).

Yeah, the Hunger Games are pretty tame fare compared to Battle Royale.

Great breakdown of ARG's weaknesses. Still if it ended up Germany vs Holland, I think Holland would have put up at least a good a fight as Argentina did, especially given the relative slowness of Germany's wing players, Robben would have run through them all day (and not been caught off side as blatantly).

Gravity was OK, but the complete disregard for any realism in the physics involved put a damper on it for me. Still a fun ride, with great acting by Sandra B. And Tina Fey's Golden Globes joke about the movie was priceless: "'Gravity' is nominated for best film. It's the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age."

Watched PBS 'Last Will. & Testament': I'd heard obliquely about the "Earl of Oxford" theory, but hadn't really gotten deep into the mystery. Interesting topic if you're into that kind of stuff.

It is not the tameness that I find annoying, it is the lingering impression that the author of the books copied the subject matter and adapted it for a young western audience for opportunistic financial gains.

In addition, there are lots of gimmicks in the movie, like the dress catching fire, etc...

Hunger Games looks like a cross between Battle Royale and Rollerblade (and several other movies actually).

'The Hunger Games' (I have both the Blu-rays) and never anymore; kid's stuff. 🙂
These young 'talented' actors are simply not my cup of tea. ...Next. 🙂

* Last night I watched this 1974 documentary (on Blu of course) ::

Meh.

Watched this in a Toronto theater in 3D, with the cool non-colored glasses. It was awesome:

Consequently, also own it on blu-ray but non 3D:

I have a modest pseudo 5.1 (my centre channel is actually spread in the LR) for now and I cannot get the motivation to use more.

I am more inclined to build my own immersive system using a synchronized MIDI protocol track so as to add scents, motion, tactile feedback, temperature, etc...

I also am thinking of how to construct a full tubed surround. For that, I would need a few things, not the least of which is a set of inexpensive tube amp designs for the surrounds. For the fronts, I will re-use the Tubelab SSE amp I have built myself.
