I use both a 1260W and a Lab12 in my living room, the're both in a hybrid/ tapped horn. For home/ HT-use they perform very similar but for PA-use I have more confidence in the Lab12.

It's been 11 years since I purchased my first Lab 12s, and as far as I know, all are still working with their original cones and voice coils.i dont even have much confidence in a lab12
The LAB (Live Audio Board) 12 was designed in an era for people who ran primarily live music with as little as 1/10th the average power of some of today's EDM.
As long as one does not expect it to survive much more than it's rated power of 400 watts AES (approximately 200 watts "RMS") one can be confident in the speaker.
I never expected the surrounds to last, but the Lab 12 has proven that wrong, even here at 6200 feet where there is almost double the ozone (tire sidewalls crack at an alarming rate) than at sea level, the foam surrounds still look and feel almost new, other than some impressions left from hitting the grill cloth, which lets me know when Xmax has been exceeded 😉.

Ok, I am considering building up a reasonable PA for some local music festivals, generally outside and was wondering if I would be better going for 8 of these or four of Xoc's TH18 with the B&C 18sw100? The music is almost always live bands. I figured that pricewise they would be pretty similar,even taking into account the amplifiers. Also, am I right in thinking these play a bit higher and therefore it should be easier to build a two way top rather than needing kick bins as well? Any thoughts?

2) Neither should need kick bins if crossing over in the 100 Hz range, either have similar response above 100 Hz so would be approximately equal in that range, though the B&C is smoother.

Just helped my prosound buddy set up his new smaller rig with four of these and his mini line arrays, under a tent...they really work. Impressive. A bunch easier to handle than his LAB12 horns, and maybe just as good overall, SPL aside of course. Guess I'll have to do one for my shop. Or two.
How many PAL12 cabs would you say deliver the same SPL as a Lab horn ?

all of the measurements that I have taken shows that the Lab 12 and the Pal 12 are the same sound. The big difference is the SPL. It's not a small difference, they are totally different. The Lab 12 gets a lot of gain when stacked correctly as the mouth gets bigger, you get no such benefit by putting a few Pal 12's together. If you want the bigger sound you need the big horn box. But it also depends on where you use the 12", inside a small room the Pal 12's work great, I use them for drum sub and side fill sub so they don't have to move air a great distance! Almost every time I use the Lab 12's it's outdoors and for a crowd.

^yup that's expected when you cluster 4-6 huge mouth'ed cabinets together. Frontal area alone acts as a "waveguide" so to speak. You're getting a big directional increase in SPL
I need the SPL because the sound has to cover like 60 meters from the back of a truck. There is limited space available for subs. One guy does it with 10 TH115s. FLHs can do it but the sound is not deep enough and one of the biggest problems is hot Caribbean sun and long hours causing heat build up in the small sealed chambers. No problem playing for 4-5 hours but after that voice coils start to get cooked. THs don't have this problem. The Keystone is tempting but 8 will require 212 inches W x 90 inches H - for subs alone. We still have to put 8 KF850s on top of that.
Keystones 40-42 inches tall and 22 inches wide (e.g. with the exit on the side ??) would be just right but I am not sure about the Fb with the shorter path length and the reduced volume. The Keystone was found to be 2 db louder than a TH18 so even if the modification reduced SPL by 1 db, it appears it will still be a tiny bit louder than the TH18.

The Keystone is 26.5" wide, x 8 = 212" wide, 45" (not 90") tall.The Keystone is tempting but 8 will require 212 inches W x 90 inches H - for subs alone. We still have to put 8 KF850s on top of that.
If frontal area is a concern, you could forgo the keystone exit shape and put the exit on what normally would be the bottom, resulting in a 45" deep cabinet with a frontal area of only 26.5" x 22.5" per cabinet.
8 of those would be only 45" tall by 106" wide, or 53" tall by 90" wide.
