If you have not done anything to the wiring connections the drive should not spin anti-clockwise. If that is the case it means there is something wrong with the servo circuit.

I have a couple of things to investigate as well as this all started when I changed the laser mechanism. So I'm going to backtrack and check everything was replaced properly. it's a while since I did it though. The mechanism has 4 pins that slide into runners on the transport. Am I dreaming or did they have rubber/plastic sleeves on them, or do they go in as they are?

The runners have no sleeves they run direct plastic to plastic only grease to make it run smooth .The laser is mounted on shock absorbing rubbers tho x4.

I also blew one of the same ICs in the past and got a replacement from eBay:

Checked the 5v supply. The 7805 seems okay. The display does light up btw, maybe didnt see it properly before. The other regs I installed near the driver ics' all measure around 8v. Any suggestions to have a look? Never had this fast spinning before.

You should have more than 8v more like 10 to 11v plus and minus check voltage @ u148/150 should be +-10 to 11v pins 9 to 16 on tca 0372dp2 should be to 0v

So you installed some extra 7808 and 7908 for the servo driver IC's?
Can you show or explain how and where you've added these in? Is there a chance you have a positive and negative regulator mixed up anywhere?
Don't forget to check for lifted pads. Seriously, I've had this exact problem lots of times.

Another thing you can do is very gently touch the tops of some components while the disc is spinning and see if it affects it (being mindful of mains voltage, obviously).

Totally agreed with you Ben. I have encountered similar problem with copper strips of the PCB. As the PCB is more than 10 years old the strips can be damaged and peeled off easily in particular when too much heat is applied. I need to use jumper wires to bypass the damaged strips.
