Sorry, I don't have any other DAC with AD1865 DAC chip for comparison. I do have a D1 clone with PCM63P. They are of different sonic signature, of course.

I ask you this question in another form. Please, could you give a rating for this dac with the scale from 0 to 10. Only your subjective opinion.

LEd mod or not
cathode bypass cap type + size
CCS or not
filterectomy or not
so many variations and each will sound slightly different.
Warm and syrupy (what many would call 'tubey or valve sound' )? Then use the stock BOM with the filter, use bypass caps in the cathodes. Loose warm bass but lovely mids and liquid highs.
Slightly warm but clearer? use the LED cathode mod (getting rid of the cathode resistors and bypass caps) and ditch the filter. Bass tighter and better defined, mids still great (but not quite as euphonic) and the highs a little clearer (but still warm).
Accurate with even tighter bass? Then drop the B+, use a CCS as the anode load, use a the LED mod, ditch the filter.
All subjective, but thats how i heard things.
I prefer it to the cambridge audio dac magic, its more natural to my ears, but then the parts alone cost as much as the complete dacmagic, so one would expect it to perform to a similar standard.

I own a Pioneer PD-T09 Japanese 100V version that I bought in the mid-90s for USD1500.- (HK is tax-free) that I still use it as a CD player for digital output. The DAC-end wins in every aspect re: the DAC portion.
The DAC-end built by me is a keeper. Otherwise I'll not house it in a chassis fitted with WBT RCA inputs and Furutech FI-10(R) Rhodium-Plated IEC connector.
Do I have to use the OS-CONs for the 47uf caps around the AD1865? I have spare Panasonic FCs that I can use. Or is the OSCON necessary for best performance?

Just sharing my progress. I do not have much time to spend on the project but I am nearly there.
Yesterday I managed to run Salas Shunt. R13 = 8.9R (2x 18R in pararell). With DAC board is attached (no ICs though) I am able adjust ditigal branch up to 5.3V. If I try to go for higher voltage it locks at 5.37 (Vgs drops to zero). For both analog branches I am able to ajust up to +/- 5.6V
Also I am thinking about using Russian PIO caps for I/V. Those are really BIG BOYS (even compared tho Hyrels) 😀 😀 😀

the sound, like. beacuse i use many Salas low shunt for DAC, and SSHV for Iv stage, and the coment it good.
