Since I was effectively blogging my progress with the project as a forum thread anyway, perhaps it would be better to make it a blog rather than a post. I'm open to the idea, but does anyone ever read these blogs?

depends on the content I guess
some of my blog pages have over 1000 views, but very few comments.. if you are looking for interaction a thread is probably better.
I think it is a good idea to have a project blog page though, to keep the latest versions of circuit diagrams etc and link to it form your build thread, though this would be best done at the begining of the thread. or you could diligently post the link at the end of each post.
