wire brushing

Well if Chad is getting a "wire brushing" regarding his questions I guess I'll have to line up for mine as well... I found his questions very much mirrored my own and his explanation of lack of knowledge again describes my condition... keen, willing to learn, some successful soldering experience; reading all I can about electronics circuits, power supplies, transformers, etc.

In all that still haven't come across terminology such as "~" so I also had that furrowed brow look.

amp chassis and other bits and kits

I found a a very interesting site dedicated to amplifier chassis's plus a variety of switch gear, heatsinks, sockets/connectors, etc., all designed to fit and work with the chassis, for what seem very reasonable prices given the quality of the gear. Shipping to North America causes a bit of "gulp" but still seems hard to pass on the convenience (except for wires) of a one stop shop.

I've had a number of emails answered promptly, and in detail, by the proprietor, Simon Brown - all very helpful indeed!

Site is DesignBuildListen DIY HiFi Components and Kits - check it out at http://www.designbuildlisten.com/

Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has actually built with these.

Thanks

Whilst were on the subject of case suppliers:

http://www.hifi2000.it/default.asp?Langid=1

http://www.audiokit.it/ENG/Frames/Introduction1.htm (look under Cabinet & Chassis and then Hifi2000)

http://www.speakerworld.nl/indexENG.html

http://www.machmat.com/sales/chassis.htm

http://www.atiresearch-anodized.com/products.html

I went for the hifi2000 cases:

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Came to UK£370 including shipping for 3x 4U cases as shown in the picture above. Still waiting for them to arrive but they certainly look proffessional enough.

I recieved this email and thought it more helpful to reply in this thread:

Hello Shinobiwan,

Found both sites you recommended for the subject case but poking around for a minute or 2 didn't turn up the precise one pictured. Looks very slick and professional! Does it come with the heatsinks as pictured? How about the switch gear, iec input, etc?
Thanks
Roman

The cases are the 'pessant dissapant' with the 10mm thick alu front option and the milled handles. No connector or switches are supplied as standard but its possible to get them pre cut if you buy direct from hifi2000 in Italy. So providing you know the cut out sizes and the hole spacings you can just fit them when they arrive. Talk to Andrea who runs the place and he'll sort you out.

Andrea's email:
direzione@hi-fi2000.it

BTW I don't have shares in the company or anything like that, I just found them helpful with quality products and reasonable prices.

Plitron website transformer schematics

I thought this schematic of transformer primaries might be helpful as in the attached below - this one is of the primaries - will attach secondaries in other mail.

secondaries schematics

I would appreciate hearing from someone experienced regarding which of the wiring schemes would be used for wiring one transformer to 2 PSU's (GB150ABS) according to what Greg is recommending.
Thanks very much in advance,
Roman

ska wiring

Hi Chad,
Just wondering if you would be willing to continue the drawing showing connectivity;

from PSU's to amp modules,

from RCA inputs to amp modules,

from amp modules/ps to binding post outputs,

Your previous work in this regard has been simply outstanding and understandable. I'm sure Greg also appreciates this. Unless it's a train coming the other way I think I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel! :D

Thanks very much,

Roman

Hi All
I have built Greg's GB300D, his 300W amp modules. I am running them at 200W/8ohms, 400W/4ohms.

I am asked Greg for some tweaks and he suggested the following
R) important Resistor's for substitution are R4 (1W is good) , R14, R3, R2.
C) important Capacitor's are C19, C3, and C1 if you choose to fit a DC blocking capacitor.

Hope this is helpful and all tweaks (that work) are welcome

Hi Chad,
maybe drawing licence but you show the green ground wires going back to the centre tap as joining and then sharing a common return.

The peak currents in this return wire are very high. The two channels should each have a separate return wire to the centre tap and if possible keep the interconnections between transformer centre tap and smoothing caps short and compact.

The length and thickness of the AC power input to rectifier and +-DC leads to PSU are less important. They act as the first R in an RC filter and a small benefit comes from making them slightly more than zero ohms.

Then run one wire from your centre tap to a separate central star ground.

DO NOT put your central star ground on any part of the route from centre tap to PSU ground. Keep them apart and connect with a short wire, they can be very close to each other if it suits your layout but not touching.

GB150D

Hi KLe, Did Greg have an opinion regarding the value of upgrading similar parts in the GB150D? I'm about to order some other supporting bits for my GB150D build from sonic craft so thought I would add these to the shopping list if the info was available.
Thanks
Roman

Hi rez
Greg has spoken to Macca about the GB150D. So, it would be best to ask Macca or email Greg at amplifierguru@dodo.com.au
