interesting, but retarded.
60hz trafo on 50hz would overheat ,saturate.. :-(

Out of all of these great and not so great tube amps on the post. What one would be a good one to build with today’s parts that are available. And not spending over 1k for two channels
And one that would be around the $500 price point

Out of all of these great and not so great tube amps on the post. What one would be a good one to build with today’s parts that are available. And not spending over 1k for two channels
And one that would be around the $500 price point

If you are set on one of the designs here (and there are A LOT), then you might want to load up one the pages and search for a personal favourite or popular tube (maybe avoiding something like the 2A3 or 300B tubes because price) that is still in current production. EL34, KT88, 6L6, EL84, and the like.

Around the $500 price point, then you might be further restricted to something in an SE topology because good and heavy iron starts to gnaw away at your cash because of cost so one trade you can make is a lower number of components in SE versus PP. However, you will have SE (which I like for certain music) versus a more powerful PP amplifier (which I also like for certain music).

If you are interested in tube amplification that has been tested, well documented, and with parts easily available, then maybe head away from here and go over to the Baby Huey PCB in the Group Buy. There are two versions, one with original in mind using the EL84 in a PP configuration and one that has more power to it using a pair of the EL34 with all appropriate adjustments and components to match the power. I do believe that with the EL84 Baby Huey variant, you might be able to scrape in under $500 and have a powerful amplifier in a neat and clean package.

The advantage of the EL84 Baby Huey is that you can bypass the PCBs on the Group Buy and build it like the others have done so in the EL84 Baby Huey thread in the the tube section here.

The advantage of the Baby Huey builds is that they have been well documented, there is a BOM, there are step by step guides, and probably nearly all of the problems that others have encountered have been addressed with that build.

I know that Eli speaks highly of the, "El Cheapo" build and the "Red Light District" build and those keep costs down and are also well documented here in the forums.

If you want another well documented thread, then there is the EL34/KT88/6L6/5881/KT77 Alex Gendrano build based on Mikael Abdellah's SE Tube Amplifier design from 2003. That one will probably require a little bit more than the $500 you limited yourself to, but it is a solid design.

Or there is a George over at tubelab.com and in his own little forum in the Vendor's section. His Simple SE boards represent what is the best here with good support, well documented instructions, a strong community here, a clear BOM, and it is another solid build. And you can't not like George and his website detailing his experiments (an 833 in SE -- seriously? The lights here start to dim with me just reading about when he mentions how he tested it with his guitar) and thoughts on design.

And with all that said, I would love to do make one of the amps listed in this thread off that treasure trove of designs website, but I am limited in my translation skills (Google translate does pretty good, but it is not like you are reading an article from a back issue of Glass Audio or Audio Express, I would be painted in a corner if something went "wrong" and I did not know how to fix the issue (this is the best set of forums for that, but I wouldn't know where to start to explain), and some of the components might be difficult to source like the Hashimoto or Tango iron or even the ALPS pots at a good price.

Anyway, that is my opinion. I just wanted to make sure you knew that you had options available and what you might experience. Have fun and enjoy.

I'm taking a different route... I stumbled upon a Soya Susumu's design but no way to build it as is. I'll try to convert it to put in use some tubes that are lying on my shelf. Still only on paper and no idea if it will work.

Carl, just me again to chime in once more. I don't want to turn you off of this area here as the Japanese amplifiers presented here are probably of excellent quality and held in high regard, but the barrier of entry at $500 and the other barrier of reading the Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana; it is not impossible, but it can be daunting if you are not used to it.

Now there is nothing wrong with looking over the schematics and the awesomely picturesque wiring diagrams (only if my finished amplifiers looked as nice as those drawings). In fact, I would recommend it as a brain exercise just to see the topologies that are being used. I don't understand the deep math, so I personally leave that out. What I will ask is something like... Wonder why they used that component in the feedback part of this amp? or how is the bias set up in this amplifier? or is that solid state rectification? or why is there no output transformers on this schematic?

This stuff won't rot your brain and it can be fun to look at while staring blankly in awe at the computer screen.

Anyway, here are some of the threads I have mentioned in my long winded reply up there. Most are self explanatory in their URLs.

Have fun reading!

Anything in the 3 to 15 watts. I use all Klipsch speakers. My lowest speaker is 99db

With total cost = 500 $ output transformers price is high .
OTL (output transformers less ) topology amplifiers sound great.

This one was ready build and no need any exotic or rare components.

You can find many others OTL's amp's in Goldmine library articles from Japan.

The 2nd schematic above shows the van Scoyoc phase inverter which I didn't have any good experience with (extemely limited bandwith due a too low HF roll-off). Does anyone have better luck with it?
Best regards!
Well, which schematic do you mean? From the 255 response? If this is correct then I have to confess that I need a closer look at this schematic because I do not recognize a "Scoyoc phase inverter" because what is a "Scoyoc phase inverter"?
