If Martin Colloms, if not the inventor of the term certainly did more to propagate it than many. He is an odd fish, having written a very good book on speaker design and having been involved in some fine speaker designs, yet chases the bat dung end of mad tweakiness. He is convinced he can hear the difference between a board made with lead free solder vs tin/lead. Now if you assemble a leadfree board on a production line setup for 60/40 it's not soo far fetched you'd get a crackly dry joint, but if they are both on process optimised production...

I believe that James Dyson is working on a Total Perspective Vortex 'vacuum cleaner' for those people who suffer from OCD.
This is a skill set that must be learned and/or taught.
Like learning pink noise. You have to do the seat time, play with the eq, measure, repeat. One day you will hear the eq in the noise. Your ears can "scan" from low to high.
You cannot "just listen" to all of it and know.
You can then eq something, from room to venue, and get darn close with ears only.
