Re: allen wright reg
You'd have to buy a kit or the Preamp Cookbook to get that.

Re: Re: allen wright reg
I've seen more than one shunt reg in last few years on Diy good as Superreg,or even better.
in fact-superreg was (truly -in parts) on Wright's site

I couldn't quickly find a schema.... do you have a URL?
The book is worth having irregardless.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I have info about superreg tnx to description from one guy who have the book ;
so-I don't have book and I don't have Superreg,but-according to those descriptions, seems to me that Mr.Wright already gave more than enough informations on his site (pages) and in various articles,at least one in Sound Practices.....
these pics are from his site (pages) -I save them ages ago....dunno if they are still there-because I didn't checked....maybe Mr.Rassmusen knows better..... 😉
part with 317 is CCS
part with OP is shunt reg
even if I know something more about real superreg,I will not tell you nothing more ,except that this version certainly was Superreg of his time....
just one thing-voltage reference (15V/2) on OP input is critical.......you know better than relay on 15 V supply for that 😉 even if you use crappy Oscon......
and-you already know where to place few trimmers to make thingie little more adjustable 😉

btw-ya teasing me?
isn't YOUR book loaned to Geek?
(Geek wasn't mentioned "guy" who told me about superreg.........)
edit-I just looked at .....vacuumstate.com........seems that these two pics are not anymore on site..........

I knew it -every Greggggggggggs mate must be little wacko😉
shame-teasing innocent ppl around ........

Juat about have my first Wright Wregulator breadboarded, Should be able to fire it up this weekend and see if it works Wright or not! We shall see who wins..... be it the Wright Wregulator or the Gasseous Tube Wregulator......😀 .

I'm not a fan of such a reg., I'll call "Murphy's Regulator" as I tried to breadboard it. I'll take old fashioned CV anyday 😉

Wreally???? I wonder if you breadboarded it Wright?

😉
if you not teasin' me........
maybe some in NS10 preamp related threads on Pass's subboard ....some of them are even mine 😉 ......or "mine"
anyway-it's nice to compare various and similar approachs, learn few things and make your own......don't you think?
anyway- as Geek sez (bad, bad boy!) I'll take gas toobz always ......
if not from some other reason, looks good .......😉
in fact-what make good shunt reg is more matter of exact physical layout, than exact type-SS or gassssss.....
star ground or heavy bus - matter of taste and habit, but short connections and paths are must ; not really like in case with series reg, when local decoupling is often more than enough for good results and distance between reg and active stage is not so critical as in case with shunt reg
hehe-Mark can say few words about difference in sound when he move reg close to 12B4...... 😉
Wright's Superreg is ,at least for me, example of good engineering-exactly "good enough" and like Mana from heaven for various SS stages ,when we can't use gassssssss toobz 😉
anybody with some BOZ (or any with looongish name) iterations?
try decent shunt reg with these sort of bastardz, there difference will be even bigger than with toob stages
just my few dinars......

me thinks that ZM do it right 😉
I dunno for your layout.....

anyway-it's hard to beat gasssssss toobz 😉
Just to report back that I have completed my 12B4 preamp with CCS. I had built everything on a single chassis. I couldn't get ST bottle 0D3s, but I used some russian SG4S which comes with the pinky-purplish glow too! I used JAN GE 12B4As and SS rectification with CLCRCRC. I has also used the standard "white coffin" type resistors in the PSU and, plate as a start. Should I get those replaced with Kiwame, Dale, Welwyn?
I hooked it up to my EL84 PP and It sounds way better than my previous SS preamp, much quieter, more 3D. There's hardly any buzz or hum coming out from my 93db speakers even with my ear against the speakers! A 95db full range Coral flat 8 is in the works and we'll see how that goes!
Thanks to all the help and advice from this board! 😀

Thats absolutely awesome Pengboon! Excellent work! I used Mills MRA-12 in my plate circuit but I'd also like to try the Caddock MP820/821 series of 20 watt power tab resistors in there and see how they sound. Both are expensive but justifiable in this circuit.

Well, I have built up the Wright Wregulator but only half of it is working. The second half has 0 output. How much bias does the second stage IRF820 require? I get about 60 to 120 mv at pin 5 of the LF351 and it varies up and down as would be normal.... I'm not sure if I have a bad LF351 or a bad IRF820, or something else... have been all over the breadboard and its all wired correctly.....
Thanks!
Mark
Thanks!
