jrebman said:So Peter, do yu recommend another new thread be started for a second group buy, or what's the best way to go about this? Would this include just amp boards or PSU as well?
Any rough idea on what parts cost for a finished F4 runs?
You can post here or start a WIKI page. PS boards will be also available.
The parts for two channels shouldn't cost you more than $100, plus transformer and chassis.
Peter,
Thanks, this is looking really interesting. I'm already about 10% through the F4 thread and this looks like it will be a great amp -- bridged monoblock, or basic stereo to drive my Sapphire XLs.
Is there a parts list somewhere? I am asking because I'm blind and can't see the schematic to be able to make my own.
Is there provision on the PSU board for a CLC filter? Any guesses as to what the size of a finished amp would be?
I appreciate your patience as I come up to speed on all this, but I've always thought a unity gain buffer was really the way to go, but this one with no global NFB looks even that more interesting.
Thanks again,
Jim

The schematic can be found here: http://www.firstwatt.com/downloads/f4_om.pdf
The parts list is attached. As the boards are based on original amp design, no CLC filtering option on PS board. Another reson is that I wanted to keep the size down, you can always attach inductors off the board.
Some parts were also listed here: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=1329905#post1329905
The finished amp size will depend on your chassis, heatsink need to be of reasonable size though. An example is my F3 monoblocks where I wanted to keep the size to minimum, yet still came out with 11 x 11 x 11" (stereo amp would be same size)

I'm building my first stereo set of F4's now. I'd like another pair as well. Count me in.

f4 schematic
Jim,
I am afraid this is an old version of schematic, maybe I am wrong, somebody correct me if I am wrong, please.
Go to http://www.passlabs.com/np/f4-power-amp.pdf
Simple method how to differentiate versions:
R3-R4 - New=10 Ohm (Old = 22.1 Ohm)
R10-R15 - New=150 Ohm (Old = 100 Ohm)
(There are some other changes also.)

Ok, I'm in for two boards plus PSU boards. One for myself and another for another guy here in town.
Peter, how many do yu need for another run?
Thanks,
Jim

Of all the amplifiers Nelson has designed, and allowed us to play with, I think the F4 will be the most versatile, the most timeless--pure unadulterated power that only requires an excellent source.
This way, we can focus on perfecting the source.
Such joy!😀

I agree and I like the fact that I can provide, for example, a tube gain stage and use the F4 for current amplification only. This seems the most logical way to pair tubes and SS.

Now that you mention it, a tube pre might be something I would experiment with--I've always been fearful of high-voltage. Does a tube preamp use lower voltage, or at least, safer voltages?🙂
