WiiM Ultra: who has it and who has already opened it?

How? I mean, for what it offers it seems quite pricey and the connectivity reviews are mixed.

BTW, I found the WiiM Ultra on Sale here:

https://www.kingsleymall.com/produc...ping&msclkid=180fb926aadc1e2ba383d1257c4fa481

But I've never heard of them and the price might just be too good to for real?

In any event, the way it looks like now is that the WiiM Ultra with a nice DAC... for around 1000 bucks, is a very good sounding proposition. If you look around and can find used and sale items you can walk away nice.... I got the Topping D90LE for 400 bucks... I'm into the Burson Swing with the v7 Classics for 550 bucks and the Nitsch I paid full MSRP. I also got the RME AD/DA FS but, even when I bought it almost brand new used, was still a LOT more.

There are some glitches still using the Ultra from Tidal Connect from a PC... it fails to appear as a device... so I got to toggle the DNS server setting over WiiM Home application... I see the same both on WiFi and Ethernet. This weekend I'll try using static IP addresses over Ethernet, see what happens.

It is indeed a device made for Android devices!

Yeah... thanks... I am having a great time with this little box. I forgot what I was missing when I took out the PC from the main rig and lost bit perfect playback.

Gulp.... I keep thinking that I might have to do a re-thinking of my audiophile priorities...

Hmm.... like perhaps I should simplify my life.... listen to music.... get rid of the three racks, SELL some of the stuff, no need for a stereo in every room... get rid of the hardware habit... Who needs two pairs of Magnepans when one pair has been in the box for five years.... all those amps... all those records...

NAWWWWWWWW

I need another WiiM Ultra for the wife's home office. My daughter might need one too... but WAIT, she's got an iPhone... hmm....

For those of us who normally have to get up to change the volume on their pre or power amp, it can be done without the sound degrading volume slider.
I found that the pre gain sliders going from -10 to +10db do not degrade the sound.
For me that's plenty db to find my sweet spot of loudness between different tracks and even different inputs.
Most convenient when using Tidal or any other streaming service as the pre gain tap can be left open. Less convenient though if listening to music via the Wiim app library as you have to go to the pre gain tap leaving the library to adjust the volume.

Came across this and wonder what it is about. Jitter as measured by Amir is absolutely fine even if not stellar.

Just curious, does the USB output contain a sub out channel or is it just the main channels with or without HP? Is there a digital volume control on any of the digital outputs or is volume control relegated to the DAC or amp?

The volume disable works both for USB and the built in DAC. That also disables room correction.

INTERESTING BEHAVIOR.... When playing over USB to an external DAC. With fixed volume.

You can not modify the volume with the remote... BUT you can change the volume when using WiiM Home!

Check this out... the volume is set to fixed... yet with WiiM Home I can drag the volume limit bar.

BTW, the connection to the DAC doesn't like that... at least the Burson Swing DAC. When I do mess around with the volume this way, while playing Tidal Connect, sometimes I have to cycle the power of the DAC to reset the connection between the WiiM and the DAC.

BTW, when I was showing my wife how to use the WiiM Home in the stereo, while she was using her Android phone to drive it with Tidal HiFi.

She asked how to change the volume?

For a second I was miffed... then I realized..

The volume control on the preamp.

I mean, what's wrong with using the volume control knob on the front panel of the preamp?

BTW- The Nitchsch DAC with the Schiit USB Multibit / Unison interface doesn't need those USB reclockers. Indeed, the sound of that unit when hooked up to the WiiM is better than my other DACs. In fact, I'm looking at getting rid of the other DACs and buying some of Schiit DACs with balanced outputs.

The clarity/purity of the treble is outstanding.

Got the same SMSL DDC and an even better Fifo DDC from Ali.
They make a noticeable difference in clarity and spacial presentation.

What is your set up like?

I think the DAC's USB makes a huge difference.

Once again, I think Schiit's stuff doesn't need the USB reclocking at all.

Mike Moffat designs the Schiit digital stuff... and I honestly don't think his USB DAC can be bettered. The WiiM Ultra to Schiit USB DAC with the Nitsch analog circuits is a killer.

Isn't this Schiit interface used between the source and the external DAC? If so it's basically a more expensive version of the SMSL PO100pro and as such has the same function.

I'm not into expensive ready made units as they are most often compromised as to not take away the profit of the next higher unit.
It doesn't take much DIY effort to get at least the same sonic results for about a third of the price.

This is my setup made of modified Chinese boards and it actually is the most analog sounding digital playback I have heard to date.

Cost about $320 including the very good silent switcher to power the Accuphase clone board and the DAC.

The Cary SLP 90 tube pre clone is optional but extends the soundstage in all directions without loosing any details.

This was of course a test setup.
It will all finally go into a nice case but with the Chinese Fifo DDC.
