oh ! 😱 but she is Scottish ??? how is it possible ?
impressive difference with the Scottish accent ... 😕
i think it is this kind of English fascinates people around the world.
Is educated, polite, friendly, charming, warm, clear but firm. A perfect mix of social virtues.
To end i think that some English people just use their own language without the adequate respect.
Come on ... is the world language of educated people 🙁
be educated you for first 😉
When a foreing person speaks a bad english is just ridiculuos. But also quite funny.
For instance i have collegues here who speak like they have beans in their mouth ( guess what country are they from)
They are very polite and nice by the way.
But when an english person speakes a bad english is disappointing for foreigners.
Is like to see Brazil playing a bad football ...
Regards, gino 😀
I'd recommend Colin Firths accent, after all he played the King > PM.
https://youtu.be/dnBzMmsHAy8?t=3m50s earlier in his career in a rare Argentine Melodrama, over the top funny in peculiar way, not considering the serious political climate background.

The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) used to be the paragon of correctly spoken English.
For quite a while now the ABC standard of vocabulary has been dumbed down to the point of less than that of a six year old.
Sad really that this decline has become the norm.
Dan.
Same with the B.B.C. Max, utterly shocking yeah but no but initlike....know whot I meen?
.... meen?....
It's funny how humans produce a sound to 'meen(!)' something and in different languages the 'meening' is different ! 🙂
Here 'mean' or 'meen' ( same sound ) in an Asian language is what they call a 'fish' ! Pronounced exactly the same way ! 😀
So we could say " That's a fishy story" or "That's a meany ( meeny?) story " ! 🙂

It would be interesting,
To see how much of the UK actually speak the "Kind" of English that other countries think is "English" the correct grammar and phraseology.
I bet it is less than people think.
I think that most countries think of English as the "Queens English" however I assume the knights spoke old English..

M. Gregg

The bold is exactly why my parents foisted their knowledge of English and elocution lessons on me...... I myself find it disappointing that 'my fellow Britishers' mumble and fumble with words.
What can we the proud do?
Not much unfortunately, maybe force them to listen to Maggi Thatcher speeches interspersed with a well orated 'You will speak proper, do you 'ere me?'
The other reason, as snup pointed out, is that the education system in the UK is, to put politely and mildly, a waste of a kids life.
What really shocked me how different can be language between communities living just some kms apart.
Just look at German and Czech ... Austrian and Hungarian ... Italian and Slovenian ... absolutely and completely different.
IMHE a different language is the strongest of the social barrier.
I am sure that an English person can relocate very easily in any of the English speaking country ... this is a huge option.
You are bored in the UK countryside ? ... you can pack your things and move to Melbourne ... or Vancouver ... or LA, Miami ... Falkland ...
That is fantastic. I would love to have that chance.
I could only migrate to Ethiopia ... hoping that someone still speaks Italian 🙄
Lucky you 😱
You can runaway anytime ...

I think that in the end the Anglosaxon model is winning.
Because it has been tested and improved around the world.
English had to deal with all the people in the world. They have a immense experience of cultural exchange with people of any kind.
One case is emblematic ... Hong Kong.
Maybe i am wrong ... but i think there will be more chance that China will become more English than HK becomes more Chinese.
Even Chinese kids want to be more English than Chinese. This means to me that Chinese is not updated.
And the day when China will switch definitely to English the circle will be closed. And i feel it will happen soon.
For instance i think that even in Russia English is much more popular that one can think.
All the technicians from Russia i met had a so much better English than me and my italian collegues. Maybe because they study it ? 😱
You should try to conquer definitely China.
Just not offer them your porridge ... for the sake of good international relations. 😀
Kind regards, gino

I'd like to emigrate back to Yorkshire, am an 'East Riding' lad you see.
Born in Hull.
Cornwall will do in place of the East Riding, language down here is 'proper job me 'ansome', surfs good too!

Sippy,
How much of the Uk do you think speaks the Queens English? (%)
Pure and unaltered.

breakfast of champions > long term carbohydrates help one have the energy to fight natives all day.Just not offer them your porridge
I think 0%
I think about 5-10% and that's pushing it.
I think people that speak foreign language are more likely to try and emulate the Queens English because that is text book style.
I have only ever met a few that speak like James Bond and a few news readers women that are very articulate with language (however its there job to be).
I know a lot of people that speak differently to do their jobs and then change when at home or relaxing. ie its not natural English.

Hi and yes of course.
But i can tell you that the very nice thing is to have the chance ... even if in the end you do not use it.
Personally i am trying to relocate myself in Basingstoke ... my Company has some offices there. but it is very difficult. Really difficult.
There is a long waiting list.
Because people think to the future.
Norway is already closer than Italy to UK ...
I am working with all Norwegian here, and while their English is much much better than mine i feel a bit of pain when they are forced to speak a language that is not their one.
I had any interest in Norwegian language i should start studying it.
But i still see it, internationally, as a dialect. I have already mine.
I feel their regret because i did not take Norwegian language lessons.
Nevertheless they spend big money to send the children to UK to study.
If Basingstoke will not be possible the second English option is Nigeria ... 😱
how is the Nigerian accent ? well received ? 🙄
Thanks a lot for the interesting advice.
Kind regards, gino 🙂

I take the liberty to propose another option ...
