Why English language is so popular ?

They should stop the translation services

also because, in the end, there must be an official language.
Usually when there is contract the reference version is one in a specific language in case of dispute.
So a unique language is really needed to solve problems.

if that is the case (which I doubt) then they should pick the most precise language for bureaucrats to follow (non technical) instructions, then that would leave French as the winner.

I dunno, all I know is I Can stick out like a sore thumb Just because I know how to communicate orally.

I know that some kids were beaten up in the 70's using words like "Actually and because" they were regarded as posh!

Its a sad world..

These days many teenagers seem to want to emulate "Other" behaviour and can't understand that in 10 years time it will all be antiquated history.
Its modern and "Hip" to be with the crowd..but the crowd won't get them into a job. The impact that language has at an interview is very underestimated!

So you want to be a teacher.. answer..Yeah man..get the youth to respect the world..

Or

So you want to be a teacher..answer..Yes I think I could make a great impact on students understanding of the problems within the world today.

winning what excactly ?

Just the world ... you need English if you want to go out of your country.
To hope to survive abroad.
How many people were hopeless in their country and found wealthness in an English speaking country ? millions of people.
I can tell you that i am more the sure that if i were born in Sheffield instead of Torino my chances to get wealthness would have been ten times higher.
I am a chemical engineer by degree and in my country i can only clean toilets and the salary is a consequence.
For me it is enough to have some kind of regret.
For instance ... why have you moved abroad to an English speaking country ?
I see a Denmark flag but Location: Central Old Zealand.
I am curious to know.

I was one of those kids - an English kid in a school of 600 Scottish, bullied constantly for 6 years for being English and speaking correctly.

One of my teachers was English and one day we practiced pronunciation...
She wrote these words on the blackboard:

Jaguar
Jag-war
Jag-u-ar

One will notice that the middle 'basic phonetic' is the way Americans pronounce Jaguar.
I told her this was wrong (was a year into elocution lessons by this time) so she locked me in a storage cupboard and managed to persuade my mother to 'come talk him down' over the new fangled telephone.

When my mother asked me why I was being a pain in the nether regions, I told her that:
"This woman is TRYING to make me speak incorrectly - Look on the blackboard, read the words,!"
My mother did and that was the first time I heard / seen the power of 'Well spoken English' served with 'Northern Bluntness'
"You will NOT teach my son......"
Cant write the rest as I Would get an infraction.... Again 🙂

🙂 please ... but if even french business schools have " surrendered "unconditionally to engligh language ...
And i am sure they did so not for love of English language ... actually i think the opposite 😉
They did so to SURVIVE.

And i was extremely displeased when some italian professors voted against more English in the University.
They said that they were doing that for the love for the italian culture and language. I am speaking of a tech school not language school of course.
Liars ... they were worried to loose jobs. Why ? they are smart and i think they can catch a new language and speak it at a decent level quite easily.
Let's be frank ... what would do Irish, Scottish, Welsh in the world without English language and culture ?
Who forces the U2 to sing in English ? who ?
We say in Italy ... never spit in the dish where you eat from
unless someone wants your dish ... of course 😉
I was reading that in the more educated part of Scotland (like Edinburgh for instance ) people voted more to stay in the UK.
I met Irish worker acknowleding that to be English speaking has given them a lot of unbelievable professional opportunities
I mean ... it is very difficult to be "nationalist" in a country that does not offer oppportunity for its citizens.
My love is for people like parents, relatives, friends ... not for abstracted things or ideas. Call me materialist but i have also to survive.
And need some money to buy a nice dac that i have seen on the net ... 🙄

Just think what would happen if every school in the world suddenly taught two languages and you had to pass exams in both.

That was actually how the elementary school I went to was organized. The morning classes were in English, the afternoon classes were in Hebrew (Ashkenazi dialect, alas). Likewise, the exams. I think it was a great idea.

I should mention that Hebrew is an exceptionally easy language to speak and write. But Modern Hebrew has, of course, taken on lots of English words, since there were no nouns and verbs for anything that was created in the past 2000 years or so. And interestingly, the swearing vocabulary is quite limited, much like Japanese in that respect.

The languages for which I have personally had a total block are the Slavic ones. Perhaps it's because of the paucity of cognates and common roots with my mother tongues, or maybe it's a defect in my brain.

I should also mention that nearly every young person in the rural area in which we live is perfectly bilingual.

clearly their attitude was influenced by the familiar context.
I understand that England has been tough on neighbours in the past times.
From middle age on ...
But i think that England has rewarded those embracing its culture with international prestige and recognition.
I think it is so much that cannot be even fully realized.
Personally i would be proud of that (maybe conserving the dialect but in general i do no like dialects at all ... they are in a way primitive).
Again ... if someone does not like a culture, a language ... it is fine.
So why use that culture that language to get well paid jobs for instance.
What is this intermittent nationalist pride against England ???
We have here many Scottish consultants very well paid also ... i do not think they would have the least chance to be hired if they try to sell their culture.
A little bit of gratitude should be appropriate i think.
At least in my sector one worker is nothing without English ... nothing.

ginetto,
I am on the great island, where the danish capital also is located, far away.
Near Frederikssund, Roskilde and Skuldelev, if any of those names ring a bell ?

I really should knuckle down and learn the language of my distant ancestors. And practice it on my idiotic neighbours.

I would do a better job than an axe or fire (I have several - not toy ones either) in these times.
