sexism in the sciences is ingrained in our society.
Bend a lab rat over, and one just looks a bit more Harry.

In SE Asia, there are more females in engineering than men now.
Being an audiophile has little to do with engineering interest and is more often a solo OCD activity like stamp collecting. Women prefer social activities, in my office they are either chatting or at their computers wearing headphones for isolation
I suspect many HiFi marketeers understand the dishonesty of their snake oil, most con-artists are male for some reason.

Women are just as likely to have aspects of OCD, they just channel it differently. If you have ever made a patchwork quilt you will know that.
Of course there is the uncomfortable truth that women just 'might' not be susceptible to expectation bias as much as men and know that things are as good as they need to be without massive tweaking 🙂.

In college I often saw that the women in engineering were actually more academically gifted than the men, on average. Many of them drifted into industrial engineering which seems to be more of a management discipline, or maybe it was a social thing specific to that time and place.
Women and men tend to compete with each other in different ways that are not always compatible. Men may tend to overestimate and oversell their abilities while women do the opposite. I suspect these different strategies may drive some women out of "typically" male occupations.
In our local audio club, women are rarely seen, and almost never the same face twice, and I sometimes wonder if the women are interested and turned off by the almost exclusively male group, or if they may just be there to see what sorts of people their men are hanging out with.

My wife has spent a lot of time with Scott Wurcer, Jan Didden, and Morgan Jones, so she has a very clear idea. 😀
A) Because women put their money, where their heart is (aka: feeding/caring (for) others, aka: Breastbeast).
and also:
B) Jewelery, Clothes, Cosmetics, Housing/Furniture (impressing with looks, offer a luxurious nest (see A)).

You have the wrong woman then!
Listened to her CD last night. Women + science + audio there's always Dr. T.

If it hasn't already been said
in my experience the vast majority of women will not stop talking long enough to listen carefully so they can hear what a good system can do.

I trust my girlfriends ear more than mine. For one thing they are younger, but also she does not care about hyped up brands like RAAL and JBL. She just listens and if it sounds good she may give me a compliment, once or twice annually, being care not to bloat my ego or indulge me.
She loves "the little green speaker", the Beyma TPL-150H/Saba Green cone monitor and has claimed as her own. Kind of like how women always goes for "the little red car."

I was never 'given' any electronics kits or whatever as a child but I was always interested in how things work. Was far more interested in taking something to pieces so I could see what was going on under the lid. This was when I was like 5 years old too. I went to a friends birthday party at a similar age and instead of doing birthday party things I sat in front of their washing machine to watch it spin around because it was intriguingly different to our own.
At car boot sales we visited I always wanted to buy the odd electrical items with the stall owners saying in disbelief to my parents - are you sure he wants this?
When I first saw an escalator I vanished from sight and was found on my hands on knees trying to see how it worked with similar things happening at fairs and fetes. Where they would have motor driven or sometimes steam powered! rides and displays I'd always be crouched down so I could see the inner workings.
Is anyone aware of any research whether men and women "hear" differently? Is there a biological reason?
I can not quote or reference it, but I remember reading, must have been about ten years ago, that Dolby Laboratories made a (non-representative - meaning, not enough participiants took part in order to come to a generic conclusion, that is appliable onto mankind as whole - still being good enough for those, who sell surround-technology) research , testing men's and women's positional hearing.
The result was, that overall men have a better positional hearing. However, in certain tests, women have scored better.
I guess, this may have to do with territorial behaviour, how it developed during evolution. Those, who play ego-shooters online with headphones, may know, how important it is, to hear, where that bullet/steps came from.

An interesting discussion with lots of references to chase further. such as women prefer music quieter as they have more sensitive hearing!
The localisation is certainly from an anthropological basis sensible if the males were the hunters (or hunted!).
But a complex subject and not one that can be summed up in a couple of sentances.

Sure. Didn't want to simplify. It's just, that these few sentences were the only answer, that I had. Better poor than starving ;-)

Wasn't aimed at you, just to point out that what I posted was not a full discussion!
Don't forget the nail-phile.gossip-phile , fashion-phile , bust-hubby's-balls-phile , compete-with-other-women-phile , etc.
shall we talk shoes?
Why not? I have more pairs of shoes than my wife. I particularly like Church's shoes, which are hand made in my home town. They get resoled back at the factory and at least one pair is over 20 years old.
Seriously, I don't know whether there are some weak attempts at humor here or there are a lot of misogynists on this forum.
