Can anyone give me the lowdown on soundstreams, I forget what ones are before the buyout and what models were considered better. Is the reference after?

I don't know all the answers, but the Reference was pre-Power Acoustik / bankruptcy. The last of the "real" SS were USA (short stint), Rubicons, Lil'Wonders, Angina, Human Reign, Tarantula and Continuum.
All the Italian artist names came afterwards, as well as XXX, VGA, XGA, EGA are Power Acoustik's work.

Thanks for the info. I have a rubicon that seems to work really well, I might run that next and was pretty sure it was old school. Is the one with flat fins not humped. Some of the prices seem to have dropped in the last week...or is it just me? Been trying to pick up a couple odd amps to fill out sets to run my system later.
Up to about 2001, I think, Soundstream was still high-end. I have a magazine around here somewhere from around then that mentions the buyout. They also made a "granite" series of amps that looked pretty solid, that's going back maybe 10 years. Does anyone remember that green, chopped Toyota with all the Granite gear that Spinella built back in the day? I loved that truck, I remember drooling over the article in AS&S in high school. 4 fifteens running off of two 55x2 amps...seems silly now, power is so cheap now...both ways.
My plan is to run class d on subs, then again I ran this 302 on a single 12 and it went louder than I needed on 8ga wire. But I am pushing for good 20Hz and up so extra power will be used to reach down & have more control, not get louder. Just trusting modern class d will not be short on quality I can perceive in subs...I should search here for a thread on that.
I know the blue ones tend to be the good ones, but not sure if they made them after the change and if they did was the design/components different. Excepting the dark granite and the few polished ones I have seen anyway. Also hear some have SMD transistors that I really don't want.

Remember the DA-2? This was one of only two home amps I remember from Soundstream. It was rated at 200W into 8W, 400W into 4W, and 500W into 3.2W, and had a full-bridge SMPS operating off 120/240VAC mains. Pretty cool. Occasionally, one appears on eBay. Saw one a few years ago and copied all the pics of it. If I can find the cpu I have them on, I will post them here. Ausio magazine did a really good article on them back in 1994-95 era.

I've seen home units here and there but I can hardly get my HT fired up for a movie these days. Here is one 250222407883 on there now. I tend to like HK home stuff, but the old one I have is in my shed awaiting some minor repair. Have to finish some remodel before I get ambitious with sound equipment in the house.

Yeah I remember that. And Soundstream had a cassette deck in 1989-90. I don't know who made it for them, but it looked like a Yamaha or Blaupunkt. Really clean lines.
I'd forgotten about the GRANITE stuff. It wasn't around too long, IIRC. SS also had some "regular heatsink"-looking amps in the P series (P205, et al) in the mid-late 1990s using the venerable LM3886.
I remember linear power having a HU back then but never got to try one. I remember the kenwood with the EQ tray that came out motorized, that was the coolest at the time.
I think it was made by Nakamichi.EnvisionAudio said:

Help with PPI Art series A404.2 & A600.2
Heya all!...Sorry this may seem like outta the place but its with regards to and old amp, and this is the most recent tread so I'm guessing more people are following this thread.
I used to be really into car audio but due to work load I had totally lost touch with it since I graduated from college. Anyways its been over 10 years and I just pulled my old system out from storage and was thinking of how to rebuild it.
I can't recall the full wiring setup and I can't find any email contact for tech support on the PPI homepage... I hope someone can help me out here.
The A600.2 is supposed to be able to be bridge and run at 600watts at 4ohms... does anyone know if its possible to run it stable at 2ohms to crank out 1200watts?
Does anyone know where I can find wiring diagram of how to bridge the amp?.... for these 2 amps?
Here's what I was thinking of doing...basically bridging the A404.2 to run the front splits.... running the A600.2 for the rear splits and finally bridge another A600.2 mono to run the subby...
Does anyone have any suggestions?... Its sounds a bit simple and not overly technically but its been along time since I messed with systems. I hope that I can get some suggestions from all of you.
Would either run my old 20bit clarion DRX9255 or change to the newer 24bit clarion decks as source.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated! thanks ALL!
PS. has anyone used the butler audio tube amps before?... any idea how the butler tube amps would perform hooked up the the clarion 24bit bur brown DA converters?..

Better to start a new thread if you want specific help for your system. Those old amps are good, I don't know about 2 ohms on that one I'd double the subs instead. If you get a new HU go for DSP....I don't think many actually have better sonic quality just because they are newer if your old one is good (for similar models). Wiring has not changed, should hook up like any except some new HU can't run many amps off the remote and you have to use a relay....weak IMO but the way they are.
If you want that kind of power not sure you want a real tube amp, but there are some expensive ones out there you can try. I think Tru has one? I bid on a Butler once but that close as I got. I would never bother with a car except for purely experimental reasons, if I had the cash to blow on it. I'd spend on the HU first, and/or better DSP and front stage drivers/setup because that is where SQ is at.
And don't double post.

the great thing is that the SMPS is already separate from the amp section. it would be a simple matter to graft a great amp section of your choice into it.

Is it just me? Been looking for some amps and seems like every amp I look at old or new is being bid on by a 0 or maybe <10 bidder for the last 3 weeks or so. Tons of 0s out there.
