Greetings,

Ask him if I can get replacement board for CDM12. Mine is damaged (probably Mitsubishi controller).
Here's a pic of a transport mechanism used in Mark Levinson CD Player, No. 31.5.

Hoi Jan
I'd like to know what one can or has to order to complete a CD player. I think he offers both CDM1201 and CD2pro ?
The daisy web site is very untransparant to my eyes....
enjoy the trip
Guido
Holger sells two versions of te CDM12 and they both cost 189 Euro:
One is a normal drive with integrated DAC, the other one is to use with a separate DAC (It has I2S output)
Both come with remote control and transformers.
There is an upgarde available wich costs about 130 Euro. This update beefs up the power supply amongst other things.

He only sells the CDM12. He came to this decision after experimenting with other drives like Sony and TEAC.

Holger invites you to e-mail him about the board. He gave me the impression he has a solution for your problem.
Hello everyone,
Hope you are satisfied with the anwers I collected for you.
It was really nice to visit Holger at SteinMusic. He is a very nice guy. He showed me all and I listened to the most basic version of the CDM12 player. The CDM12 is standard absolutly a very nice player to listen to. I can imagine that with simple upgrades you can have a really good cd-player. (I don't want to use the word "high end" because everyone has a different opinion on that term) The CDM12 is very easy to convert to a top loader if one prefers it that way. Again, the standard player is very good for a very reasonable price I think.
Greetings
Jan

Hi Jan
This seems an acceptable price. I'll have a look at the website, unfortunately time is limitted, and other projects are waiting too.......
all the best
since i'm not able to take more 'junk' into the house (per home boss directive), i thought i'd pass along another ebay deal:
Marantz CD-5000
i figured someone here should get it, as opposed to some non-DIYer who would squander the opportunity to tweak.
/andrew - living vicariously through others for now

Do all our wives conspire on these things?
I've seen a very cheap marantz cd-50 on ebay
According to Marantz, it's a 1989 model, using a philips CDM-4 transport
It it a good deal? Or is the CD-50 too low end to give a good sound, even if it has a nice mechanism?
To ask the question a different way: what would be the difference between a heavily tweaked CD-50 (or even a CD-40, or the cheapest cd player using a CDM-4) and a heavily tweaked CD-72SE?

Hello Arne, there are quite a few brands and types with CDM1/4/9. Too many to mention really. Mostly I recognise them when I see the drawer, they have a different open space cut out because of the swingarm. Brand and type are not very interesting, it has to work. I avoid CDM2 machines and the very old 14 bit ones.
I like the CD6xx ( 634,624 etc. ) series from Philips although they're 1 bit with CDM4. Most of all I like Arcam players with CDM4 in them ( Delta 70.2 etc ). Marantz CD40/50/60/80, some Technics SLPJ old types are OK too. I don't care about the material used for the case.
Some very well built, others made from cheap plastic. The age of the players leaves us only one criterium: is the laser OK ?
When you see it has a good laser buy it anyway. It may come handy as a spare when you find a broken CD80 😉 Do not forget you will nearly always have to mod any standard cdplayer with a CDM mechanics for decent results. When left standard they're nothing special apart from their error correction and readability of bad cd's.
Hello Bricolo, I stopped counting with CDM12.3 I think. So I can't say a word about newer revisions. The ones in CD63 and CD67 are the old weak ones.
I can't possibly answer your question how long old lasers will work. I have a good stock of spares for my own use and I very seldom have to change one.To be exact, I have replaced 0 till now in my own cdplayers. They live too long when compared to CDM12.xx 😉 I am sure that one won't last 13 to 14 years.
I am sure there are better mechanics out there but not for the price you pay for an old cdplayer with a good but old CDM. I like the Sony mechanics used in CDP-X3000ES and CDP-X5000ES too. The ones used in 920/930QS seem fine too. It is a matter of taste and money. I decided for myself to continue looking in bric-a-brac shops for the oldies and when I find a scratchless example with a good laser for 20 Euros my day is OK![]()
jean-paul,
where xan I find a second hand arcam with cdm-4 (since you like those 😉) ? I regularely take a look on ebay, but I've never seen one.
I neither saw the philips you mentionned, but a CD692, how good are they? They seem to use the CDM9 mechanism
I don't know CD692 but CDM9 is OK for sure. Maybe it is a good piece of equipment for modding. I can't give you info on where to find them in your region. In my region there are quite a few open markets for individuals to sell their stuff. Found nice examples there. Lots of people sell their cdplayers because they bought a 5.1 set ( that most of the time sounds less good with 2 channel audio but we knew that didn't we ? ).
A good player is Arcam Alpha 5 with CDM9. Bought a spotless one myself and it looks promising ( separate board with TDA1541A, reasonably built supply etc ). Delta 70.2 is better though.

Are there some online second hand stores in the NLs? Like ebayjean-paul said:I don't know CD692 but CDM9 is OK for sure. Maybe it is a good piece of equipment for modding. Ebay.fr has nothing hifi, only cheap cd players 🙁
I saw an alpha 5 on ebay UK, for 100£, but no 70.2
are there any differences between the cdm1/4/9? does one work better?
Thanks for the link!rwagter said:In the netherlands we got "marktplaats"

Hi
It says it is sold unfortunately (?) , (after the price - Verkocht helaas) normally they takeaway the add after a few days, keep an eye on that as some "buyers" never show up after bidding
