What would be better: buying a cd player or building one with a transport?

It usually doesn't take a lot of parts nor money to change a philips cdp into a marantz cdp since they are pretty much the same thing exept for the facia and maybe a cap or two. Every Philips range (600, 700, 800 you get the drift) had a marantz counterpart range, I don't know by heart wich typenumbers Marantz uses, but if you found out you would be able to predict what hardware is being applied.

Whitch one of the Marantz players use the CDM9 laser ?
Can't find any !?
On one laser replacement part site there was not listed any Marantz with this drive, but many Philips players...

Think this would be my best choice regarding the age of the laser....

Is there any player that would accept the CDM9/PRO as a direct replacement (if I could get my hand on such a unit) ?
