My wife bought me Beth Hart tickets…I think they were for my birthday or Father’s Day of last year.

The show was canceled and rescheduled twice. This is typical with her and resulted in me skipping a show we had tickets for a few years back. To be honest, I was kind of not excited to go.

We hadn’t seen her perform in close to 10 years and I was kind of just going along with it.

The venue was a very modest sized theater in Massachusetts. Seats were in the first 8 rows just off the aisle.

The show started late…there was a moment when we thought she wasn’t going to perform.

When she finally came out and started singing I was completely gobsmacked. To say she has talent doesn’t even scratch the surface.

To try and put it into words…it was like someone tearing their soul out of their body in stage.

At one point they had an equipment failure…out of nowhere she just started singing “Leave the Light On” a cappella…practically brought us to tears.

Remarkable experience.

My wife and I went and saw the Chicago Symphony perform the Mahler 2nd in May. Very good performance, much better than the one we saw in the mid 2000's with MTT conducting.

Not the last but thought I would post the first...

New Zealand 1976 Palmerston North Opera House. José Feliciano.
Just José, on a tall stool, guitar. Captivated us all. Unforgettable.

(Notable mention Split Enz touring their Frenzy album release. Same venue. 'I see Red' longest version ever ! )

Ooh, Mahler’s 2nd is my favorite symphony. Jealous!! Plus CSC is one of the best chorus for that mammoth work. Who conducted?
Neeme Järvi was the conductor. I thought he did a very good job, and the orchestral playing was good throughout. The brass probably isn't quite as good as when Herseth, etc. were there, but still very good. And yes, the chorus was very good as well.

We had seen the CSO do this in 2006 with MTT conducting, who I didn't care for at all, and normally I don't pay that much attention to the conductor. That performance did have Lorraine Hunt Lieberson as the mezzo, who was absolutely stunning. She passed away a couple of months later (RIP). The best I have ever heard the 4th movement (Urlicht) done, recording or live.

So you haven't been to a single concert for at least 44 years?

I got tinnitus from a house record a DJ started after a reggae concert about two and a half decades ago. Since then I wear earplugs whenever I go to a loud concert. It would have been better to start wearing earplugs before I went to that reggae concert.

We've seen lots of classical concerts. CSO, Berlin, Philarmonia, Vienna, LA, etc, etc...

But the most fun was in the 80s... front row, middle seats for The Mikado in Costa Mesa.

My object all sublime
I shall achieve in time
To make the punishment fit the crime
The punishment fit the crime

I sing it while cooking Japanese noodles. My wife thinks I'm nuts... I am.

It's one of my peccadillos... I love operettas.

Last rock was Billy Idle in the 80s... I almost got into a fight with a drunk who pushed my girlfriend, wife since, flying out of his damn way, 200 lbs of drunk Mexican vs 110 for my lovely one.. I wasn't gonna stand for it, so I got into him. Thank God his girlfriend pulled a huge punch on his nose and he walked away, bloody nose, shut eye, before he landed one on me... I was sober, so I knew it would hurt, but what are you gonna do? No more damn rock for us, I decided. The worse that happens in a classical concert is if there is a line to grab your prepaid champagne during intermission.

During reggae concerts, as long as you wear earplugs to prevent hearing damage, the worst that can happen is that you get stoned from all the marijuana clouds. The first and last time that happened to me was in 1987, during a concert of The Revelation Time.
