^ The very late 70s and early 80s were actually a great time for music.
( We used to go to Hollywood to watch all kinds of bands ).
The king called up his jet fighters
He said, "You better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way"
As soon as the Sharif was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The cockpit radio blare
As soon as the Sharif was
Out of their hair
The jet pilots wailed
Sharif don't like it
Rocking the Casbah, rock the Casbah
Sharif don't like it
Rocking the Casbah, rock the Casbah

From the late 70's you need to look further than the mainsteam (even before) because the most interesting things happened not there anymore. Music got also more democratic as recording could be done in relative high quality with little budgets also. Each era got it's great and bad music, even now.
But most of the people here are older, so stick to the styles and artist that they know. But the music scene is huge and the mainstream is today only a small fraction of it. Radio, and even streaming services, don't promote music (in general, there are always exceptions) but we got the internet now, where tons of good music can be found from all over the world... So it's not so difficult to find good music, and good music can survive, even without a record company behind them because of that.
This band from friends (Kosmo Sound) tours internationally without a big record company or radio support at all. They released an album and a few ep's on a jazz label (Zephyrus), but full own productions, recorded with own money. The label only did production and distribution and they sold a lot. They play big concerts all over Europe with their weird mix of dub, jazz, rock, arab folk ao styles and have a whole carreer without music bussiness support. And this is only one example. They got a booking agent now and so, but keep control over everything themselves. I listen to their albums a lot.

This is one of the best modern vocal classic pieces i know. The Estonian composer Arvö Part composed this Kanonen Pokajanen, and it's performed by the Estonian Chambre Choir.
