Coral H104

The Coral's H104 are the best tweeters i have heard so far. They play in my system.

here what Victor Sierra commented on them :

The Coral H-104 tweets is just plain, the best I've heard. Puts to shame all my Jbls, Tads, etc. Maybe it could be close to the Ale stuff. I don't know. But it's good stuff.

i think probably only the Onken OS 5000 Esprit, Goto , TAD 703, YL Acoustics, or Ale drivers play in the same league, but they are all very expensive. The Corals are still available at a reasonable price from time to time at ebay.

Have you tried the Beyma 385/nd?

I think I may have read in an old post that you were thinking about it at one stage. If so any impressions?
Nope. They look like neo versions of the CP380M and as the weight is not an issue in a home system, I saw no reason to change them. The 380 is a very fine tweet.

Hi guys,
from my experience the RAAL ribbon outperforms the A Capella ionic tweeter, especially when an amourphous core is used (possible as option from RAAL).
I compared the RAAL also with Accuton Diamond tweeter (D20 and D30) and Scan Speak dome and ringradiators.

The RAAL (70-20 XR) is by far the best sounding tweeter.
But I have to admit that I have no experience with TAD stuff.

Best Regards
Rainer

This one.

But in the meantime i doubt the need of tweeters at
all.

Warning - this is a long post.

FWIW I have a pair of Infinity renaissance 90's which use EMIT tweeters.
About 18 months ago I embarked on a quest to upgade the EMIT tweeters, inspired in part by DIY and other forums.
The EMIT's are a fast decay planar tweeter but not quite the worlds cleanest or sweetest sounding tweeter and have a slightly 'chirpy' character with a hint of grain. In order to fascilitate the new tweeter I built a dedicated tweeter crossover which is external to the R90's.
Because the R90's use EMIT and EMIM for mid - treble I decided to go with a true ribbon with similar dispersion characteristics to the EMIM.
The tweeter I chose was the Raven R1. This ribbon has great specs but a rather low impedance of 2.5 ohms which is about half the EMIT's. A series 2.5 ohm resistor matched impedance and sensitivity quite well. The difference was interesting. The R1 has audibly more hf extension and a sweeter top range but even with a 4th order crossover at 3KHz the low range was dynamically impaired and the soundstage while big but something of a mish mash. I tried remodelling the crossover and using dedicated amps for the tweeters but ultimately the R1's are really not quite up to task in the 3- 6 KHz range. I ended up driving the EMIT and R1 in series and implemented a first order XO at about 8KHz. After stuffing around with phase tuning, the result was much better than either tweeter on its own but still not perfect.
BTW my definition of perfect to this point had been a pair of B&W800S that belong to a friend. After a year of run in and driven by FPB Krell amps these tweeters are as clean, detailed and grain free as anything I'd heard. A close second was a pair of Focal be tweeters in a pair of JM Lab Utopia's.
Not satisfied with my own system I threw caution to the wind and ordered a pair of Raal 140-15's. These are bigger than R1's and stand a much better chance of working down to 3KHz. The higher impedance and sensitivity also makes it easier to tune them to the EMIM's.
Using a temporary mounting method on top of the R90's I carefully wired the Raals and positioned them for visually alignment - if that 's possible. I also padded them by about 5dB to match the EMIM sensitivity.
So now the result you ask. Well I was stunned. Really the difference was unbelievable. The dynamic accuracy across the board was the stuff dreams are made from and not a hint of grain, metalic edginess or any other nasty. This was as close to total purity as I had heard in my system and right up there with Focal be in every respect.
Since that initial installation I have fine tuned the time alignment and I've slightly redesigned the EMIM crossover slope for optimum 24dB /octave rolloff and ditto the Raal's as well as sensitivity fine tuning.

Overall the Raals are a truly great tweeter and can be compared with Focal be and B&W diamond domes for both tonal and dynamic purity. The soundstage is huge and the tranparency is phenomenal from micro to macro dynamics. If you want spades of ambience then the Raals are it. The high top is very slightly prominant but this is easily tamed by a slightly off axis listening position or attention to furnishings. I use several acoustic panels in stretegic locations to achieve the desired result.
So that's it really. If you want a very sweet and incredibly revealing treble then the Raal 140-15 should be on the shopping list. They are expensive but very much worth it and if you think Raven r1's are great then just wait until ou hear these. This is DIY heaven.

BTW, I also rebuilt the Raal's crossover again making use of SW cad 3 for EMIM integration. I'm now using Mundorf Silver in oil caps and copper foil inductors. This last mod has raised the bar further and I now rate the treble at least equal to anything I've heard but most importantly it's the most enjoyable and satisfying treble I've ever heard. The marriage to the EMIM is also pitch perfect and without any image wanderings at all.

I apologise for making this a long posting but I hope the ending was worth it.
