too much jazz / classical?
OK Griff,
CHeck out this german Hardcore Band:
Rykers
They play some real heavy stuff.
Now...... let me see......
you should also try THUMB, an eccelent german alternative band, their early self-titled album has some real fresh tracks on it, reminds me of early Limp Bizkit, but with a more positive vibe. Their second album, EXPOSURE is a little smoother and darker, and some songs sound a bit like the actual NUMetal hype, but they did that sound about two or three years before that started.
Check out those two, you might really like them.

Whoooops Griff,
didn't read your reply about the lost prophets.
I personally don't care too much about them (except for that particular song and the skits) , but I must admit that I didn't have the patience to listen it all through. But I will check out the new album.
PS: btw, you started this thread by asking what kind of music and what bands other DIYers listen to. I don't mind discussing only about alt/ crossover/ grunge whatever, but if you really want to discuss only on that genres, you should start a new thread.
Besides from that, I would get bored with only talking about these genres.
I think it's way more exciting to have a thread in that so many people with different likes / dislikes post. 🙂

Re: "classic/classical"
Thanks for the above. I agree with you that every country/music genre have their own classical music. But in my opinion 20 or 30 year old music is not classical music. This is just my opinion 😎
dice45 said:Johan,
the term "classic/classical" is mostly abused IMO. Means: occupied by and used occidental composed music. And it is sloppy,
language-wise, it is pars-pro-toto and the pars is "Vienna classical music" (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven), that is the style/period giving the whole genre its name.
Western hemishpere's cultural imperialism 🙂 ... I just have Indian Indian classical music in mind.
Have a look like the term also can be used. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=53613#post53613
Have fun! 🙂

Re: J.S.Bach
Thanks, fine.
Finnish is fine for me, but my mother tongue is actually Swedish, or should I say Ostrobothnian (my grandparents are Finnish speaking). You know us Ostrobothnians 😉
I'll go and look in the introductions forum.

What I listen to is varied... mostly electronica... some Favs: not all electronica:
Massive Attack, Kruder and Dorfmiester and any off shoots, Soul Caughing, Cake, Lords of Acid, Outkast, DRUNKEN IMMORTALS!!, anthing Dan The Automator does, Grizzly, MC Conrad and LTJ Bukem and whole darn GLO crew, Fokus, Dom and Roland, Tangerine Dream, Early Pink Floyd, Kodo, MJ Cole (better than Artfull Dodger IMO), Headtop (even better than MJ in the 2-step arena), BLIM, Freq Nasty, T. Power (aka Atomic dog, and MK Ultra), Autechre, Omni Trio, Boards of Canada, Butthole Surfers (the earlier the better), The Cramps, Dead Kennedys, The Strangler, Bomb the Bass, DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin (aka Cujo), Steven Kent, Steve Roach, Foundation, The Invisible Man, Inka Pirka, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, Brad B, Underworld, and the list goes on and on and on....
-Dozuki
Some reference tracks:
PFM - One and Only (Bass depth and transient)
Photec - The 7th Samari (Bass depth and mid/high clarity)
K&D - Bomberclad joint (remix)
Plasticman - Sheet one track 11 (for x-over distortion)
The Invisible Man - erratic dreams (just because I've listened to it so many times)

Thanks for the offer of enlightenment griff,
but I will stay with MY playlist, thank-you...
Miles Davis
Tom Waits
Chick Corea
Bach
Handel
Haydn
Elvis Costello
Jethro Tull
Minoe Threat
Sex Pistols
Sisters of Mercy
Clash
Lustmord
Dead Kennedy's
Ginger Baker
P.I.L.
Patti Smith
Steely Dan
Iggy Pop
Plus hundreds more..

I realize that the above list couldn't ever really test my system
and that such 'flash-in-the-pan' musicians will probably disappear in the next year but it works for me. I own over 500 CDs, more than three times as many albums and now a small collection of SACDs. I listen to what I like but I resent it when someone wants to show me 'good music'. Frankly, I've heard most of the bands griff mentioned and with the exception of Snoop Dogg, I've been underwhelmed by them. Griff's implication is that we should get out more and hear his music. The truth is, Ive been around the block a few times, I've heard the music he recommends, I've given it a 'Thumbs-down' So in spite of the classical selections I mentioned, the other selections prove that The Tubes were right when they sang "i was a punk before you were a punk...
Or maybe I should quote The Cramps, 'You ain't no punk you punk, you wanna talk about the real junk??'

oldschool,
You must indeed belong to the old school, cause I found more artists I listen to in your list than in any other member's. Just a reminder of a part of my list from the beginning of the thread😉 :
"When the word punk comes out it's usually bands like: Clash, Damned, Ramones, Stranglers, UK Subs, Vibrators, Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts, Lurkers, Saints, Adverts, Buzzcocks, 999, Exploited, Subhumans, Specials, Killing Joke, Siouxsie, Cockney Rejects, Discharge.
Finding out Dead Kennedys was probably turning point and then I started listening to Fall, Bauhaus, Cramps, Talking Heads, Birthday Party, Nick Cave, Joy Division, Bollock Brothers, PIL.
I had a short affair with Pavement, Ride, Smashing Pumpkins, Crankberries, Soundgarden, Nirvana and alike but soon found them boring. So I turned to Ministry, Revolting *****, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, New York Dolls. At that time I was also deep into Current 93, Legendary Pink Dots, Split Second, Muslimgauze, Fad Gadget, New Model Army, Delerium and Front Line Assembly.
End of 90's belonged to Front 242, Klinik, Laibach, Project Pitchfork, Sleep Chamber, Einstrzende Neubauten, KMFDM, X-Marks the Pedwalk.
Recently I'm listening to Apoptygma Berzerk from Norway (album "7" is my all time favourite), VNV Nation, Cobalt 60, Wolfsheim (highly recommended), C-Tech, Wumpscut, Dust of Basement, Inscape (more and more of that type music comes from Germany nowadays, I even got used to whole albums in German), Die Form, Assemblage 23, Funkergot, Covenant (not bad for Swedish band), Cruxshadows."

Listen to "If You're Gonna be Dumb" by Roger Alan Wade. It's on the Jackass - The Movie soundtrack, and ever since I went to see the movie I've loved that song, I slap that sucker on repeat and can let it go forever, although it's country and I hardly ever listen to country I still love it. Just thought I'd share that bit with y'all.
