just browsing through this older thread, am a bit surprised that Tom Waits hasn't been mentioned yet...
excellent recordings of all his albums especially on vinyl (he does put in a lot of time into the production himself). some of my favorites - swordfishtrombones (16 shells...), small change (the match being lit at the start of the title track is amazing!), big time, bone machine - many many others...
some other stuff i like listening to: dizzy gillispie (especially his 'big 4' recordings), charles mingus, thelonious monk, dexter gordon, have recently discovered MMW, a lot of indian classical music (especially Dhrupad see http://www.ragarecords.com for many mp3samples, eg: http://www.ragarecords.com/seniordagarbrothers.html
and
http://www.dhrupad.org/dagar/index.htm or http://www.chembur.com/anecdotes/dagar.htm for a history of the Dagar family who have preserved this musical tradition for 20 generations.
pink floyd and beatles was what got me through college (well them and the bong😉)

wow, what an old thread, and it's still going strong!
I was looking for people's recommended test discs, but came up with so much more!
I don't listen to many CDs anymore. I just get sick of them, and I don't have the money to buy very many 🙁 That makes radio really bad, with the abundance of Top40 stations all across the country (US).... Then came internet radio, and my listening became less bland. Although I was a die-hard country fan for many years, it's been a long time since I listened to one of my country CDs. Now I much prefer the less known, "eclectic" rock bands. Now thanks to guys, I have a whole load of potential CDs! 😎
The first CD I ever listened to that I practically *had* to listen to loud was Blue Man Group's AUDIO. I wish I had a DVD-Audio player so I could enjoy the 5.1 version. Now that I think about it, it's been a while since I blew the cobwebs out of my speakers 😉 I'm sure my apartment neighbors thank me for that, too!
Best Funk/jazz CD, IMHO, would have to be Burnin' for Buddy - the Tribute album to Buddy Rich. "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" just screams for a number 11 on the volume dial 😉
For anyone with a 5.1 system (DD or DTS), I'd have to recommend a copy of The Ultimate DVD Platinum. In addition to video setup/optimization, there's some audio setup and optimization with some really good test music samples for stereo and multichannel. One of which *really* makes me long for a faster, punchier system: Indoscrub (20kbs doesn't do it justice!) Hopefully my upcoming DIY 6 channel power amp will help a little 🙂
Keep on Rockin'.... or whatever 😉

Anything from rock to jazz to classical: A lot of classic rock from the 70s and 80s. Recent induction into jazz and classical, some Segovia and Al Dimeola stuff. No heavy metal, or dance/techno/trance/club.
I still like a lot of 80s pop and hair metal, but only occasionally. I find myself also listening to some of the newer guys like Oasis, Wallflowers, Matchbox 20 (yeah, I know they aren't that new but for me that's about as new as I can get).
Some of my all-time favs are BTO, Steely Dan, Dave Matthews, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Santana, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Van Halen. Actually, too many diverse tastes.

"Leçon De Ténèbres". Not to happy these days.

Hi Griff!
I just stumbled over your thread and read the first and the last page, cuz I didn't have the patience for reading all through it 😉.
Nice to see that all the people out there have kept the thread alive for such a long period of time.
I wanted to ask you about the lost prophets ( you mentioned their song "shinobi vs dragonninja") : what do you think about the album?

Please, do not abuse the term "classical". I am into classical singing and I listen often to classical music from the baroque for instance. Of course the recordings are made later 😉
J.S.Bach is my favorite musician/composer of all the time. I don't think anyone has beaten him yet in productivity and musical intelligence.

"classic/classical"
Johan,
the term "classic/classical" is mostly abused IMO. Means: occupied by and used occidental composed music. And it is sloppy,
language-wise, it is pars-pro-toto and the pars is "Vienna classical music" (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven), that is the style/period giving the whole genre its name.
Western hemishpere's cultural imperialism 🙂 ... I just have Indian Indian classical music in mind.
Have a look like the term also can be used. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=53613#post53613
Have fun! 🙂

J.S.Bach
Hei Johan! Mitä kuuluu?
I hope you guys won't mind that I greet johan in finnish.
I also like Bach veeeeryy much, I play parts of his Suite for Cello in d major on my guitar.
I've also sung the bass voice of his St Matthew's passion (hope I've written all the works right), and I must say, I love him!
My other favourite baroque composer is Sylvius Leopold WEiss, a contemporary of Bach who also lived in Saxony.
Johan, I would appreciate if we could start a little conversation on my own thread in the "Introductions" section, because it would be quite off- topic.
Just some little info about myself: I'm 19, live in southern germany, my mother is from Jyväskylä, and I intend to study on the Sibelius Akatemia.
greets,
bob

The Lost Prophets album is quite good though nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary, its well worth a listen though. They are coming out with a new album soon which promises to be unreal.
