What does the average DIYer listen to these days?

<b>Wot, no Supertramp today ?</b>

Nah. Felt like something a bit more upbeat today. What I really wanted to play was Saturday Night Fever and Motorhead, but I couldn't find them, so I played all the rest to compensate.

Gossip

Yeah Olivia Newton-John is one of the stunningest sounding and looking ladies in music IMHO.
I worked 'The Main Event' show here in Perth, a few years back.
I was up in the truss follow spotting Olivia the whole show, and she has the prettiest, bluest eyes you've ever seen, and is a really sweet, charming and nice person, and she is holding her age wonderfull well.
Anthony Warlow really can sing too.
Anybody have a John Farnam gig shirt ? - me neither despite working 6 of his shows.

Lennie from Motorhead does a funny performance in 'Eat The Rich' movie, but not the same optic nerve stimulation.

Just some gossip, Eric.

You know at this time I am finding that the list of what I don't like is much shorter than it used to be. High School was Traffic, Humble Pie, aways the Doors, Beatles, Stones and getting drunk to the Kink's was big fun. What I went to see was Zappa, Yes, The Who and a new local band called Aerosmith. Zeppalin, Pink Floyd, and the Alman Bros.
That was in the NE US in 72 to 75. Always loved Steely Dan since they really are into harmonies, took them and a love of early fusion to Texas where I picked up on progressive country and outlaw rock. Hung out in jazz bars, saw Micheal Franks, Pheobe Snow,Bobby McFarlane, Ella,Frank,Tony and Mell. Saw Miles Davis' *** while he played with his back to the audience.
Everyone likes classical whether they know it or not. I just picked up on the Bethovan and Rossini in a ClockWork Orange. How about the Flight of the Valcaries in Apocolipse Now when the Air Cav attacks the coastal village. John Williams scores to Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies, let alone all the other bits you pick up like Barber's Adagio for strings in Platoon?
I do not like monotonous music, and I don't like something that is supposed to be listened to at above the pain threshold to hear it.
That knocks out a lot of new stuff.
I like clear instrumentation, good performance and a good clear recording. At DIY meets one tends to hear a lot of Dave Mathews. Good sign I think even though I have none.
Hey I heard Eartha Kit doing Techno Dance in a store once!
My musical tastes tend to be different than even my best friends', but as long as they at least listen and enjoy they are audiophiles. I am an audiofool.
About the SACD I an hoping that will be the format. Most music I like sitting down and having it played in front of me. 5 ch just don't cut it. Of course the Sony SACDs will do the 5 ch discreet too if that floats your boat. I bought a SACD player for $180 a month ago. Needs some tweeking but is a nice machine and plays all the 20 bit mapping stuff I have bought CHEAP the last 2 years sound mighty fine. And the super discs only run 3 to 4 $ more than regular ones at everyday price.
I bought a Sinatra/Jobim 20 bit for $9 at Tower a few days ago. Sounds very good.

Norah Jones: come away with me

I want to mention that this CD used to have a retail price of $8.99. It's retailing for $17.99 now! At Tower Records anyway.
I guess once management finds out this CD sells (regardless if Norah can sing or not), they just have to double the price!

I listen to a lot of jazz--mostly instrumental and acoustic. Some pop and country. Little classical. Lots of different kinds such as:

Van Morrison
Norah Jones
Sade
Jim Brickman
Beach Boys
John Coltrane
Match Box Twenty
Blues Travelor
Santana
Tracy Chapman
Bonnie Raitt
Natalie Merchant
Chris Isackk
Keiko Matsui
Hiroshima,

etc.

😎 Didn't know we had a music forum!

ok,
I'll listen to anything. and it will depend on my mood when I play what. My music collection is about equal parts of classic, jazz, pop and world music.
This doesn't mean that I think all music is good music. On the contrary. I generally prefer music to have a certain rough edge, not to be too polished. If it sounds perfect the first time it will be boring the second. This is why I do not like Mozart.
Secondly it is vital to me that you can hear that the musician means what he is singing/playing.
After that it can be any style from any region.

Peter,
... If it sounds perfect the first time it will be boring the second. This is why I do not like Mozart. ...

Mozart is something i needed long time to grow into, i once spoke as you do now.
From my experinence of today i can say:
If you do not like the composer, it is the guilt of the performer in 99 out of 100 cases.

If a Mozart performance is boring, or worse, moaning like an unpatient child (sorry, best translation i could find for German instranslatable "nölen") , dump it! so do i. Methinks, Mozart has to be played with the soul of a child but with the highest skill an adult can achieve. It is not to be interpreted, it is to be played like written on the paper and felt by the child's soul.

I do not want to crusade, but maybe you try out one of the following and maybe you discover Mozart 🙂

piano sonatas and concertos:
Clara Haskil, preferably with Igor Marchevitch conducting
Robert Casadesus, preferably with George Szell conducting
Solomon,
Wanda Landowska on piano,
Paul Badura-Skoda,
Friedrich Gulda, (plays Mozart like an angel if he has a good day)
Geza Anda.

maybe Murray Perrahia (hearsay), and some Asian girls, they seem to have the rigth spirit and predisposition for Mozart.
We have a Asian woman here in munich, being piano professor at the Music university. She plays Mozart, tellya, have tears immeditaley, hearing her play.
And if i had an unknown Mozart performer of nowadays i liked, it always turned out to be an Asian girl.

Violin stuff:
always prefer David Oistrakh, my hint.
Young Yehudi Menuhin also made several outstanding Mozart performances.

Clarinet Concerto: Gervaese DePeyer, clarinet, Peter Maag conducting.

Orchestra stuff: Igor Marchevitch, Peter Maag, George Szell, Rafael Kubelik conducting.

String quartets: unless i could lay my hands on Budapest String Quartet recordings, i would go with the Heutling Quartet.
If you want to have the rough edge, try out Mozart's SQ #19 C-major K.465, it is called "Dissonant" 🙂 and it earns this name well. Have fun! Maybe it is your entrance to Mozart.

Hi all - good to see this new forum 😎

Nina simone - The Essential Nina Simone:
"Little Girl Blue" is just lovely - great piano too.
She has a wonderful haunting voice.

Other Jazz:
double bass - George Mraz
Trumpet/double bass :Nigel Thomas Quintet: "Egypt" from Yoichi album.

Abdullah Ibrahim is another favourite.

Otherwise mainly instrumental and female vocal jazz/blues/ballads.

World music, gregorian chants for when I need an emotional cleansing.

There's some great stuff on http://www.mapleshaderecords.com - really excellent recordings done very minimalistically - it does come through. Check out their CD of The Arc Choir - gospel - put aside any preconceptions you may have - this stuff rocks!

Enjoy..
