I definitely think you are right, and it's very good of you to caution the guys that extending this connect cable is no Sunday walk in the park.
Its tricky, it needs a deal of skill and a steady hand.
But it can be done. A small number of DIY members have done it.
I will search who and what posts.

Re connecting cable
Search jjasniew and viewsonic

Search myren and vg150
Success

Re: thoughts on cable manufacture
Could be a perfect thing!
While i was reading your post with the reference to cars. i thought of :repairkit for rearwindow defrost.
i have one(bought it last year and never used it) in front of me and tried some fine striping, it does seem to work
but again NOT a piece of cake for 16, 20 or more poles!

Re: brown cable
that is very easy if you had solder IC of PC.some times ,you must change the IC with soldering gun.
uvodee said:that brown cable is a film sheet, (ex 3M) and indeed may be a bit more heat resistant, but i sure would not exceed the 15 watts
soldering gun. and still I would prefer a different connection.
youare dealing here with between 16 and 30 poles!!! and i guess within one inch (i supose 20 mm just like i had) try getting that many poles together on such a small base with such a small spacing
like i said , i was lucky and you all will need lots and lots of luck

spending $239 on a Dell E151FP 15" 1024x768 TFT LCD ,is that?
it is cheap. i find a ord LCD :
http://www.mitsubishi-electric.com.au/PRODUCTS/COMPP/TFT/rdt141x.htm
$200! Contrast Ratio 150:1 only !
15"LCD is too big on this http://photos.gznet.com/photos/1050416/1050416-MJw5Hrc9FhI5ii3dva6pP64jbBAOp5.jpg
10''---14'' is good

yep
that's what i did, unfortunately i had 2 seperate cables to extend so there were 2 different board connectors that i had ordered with parlex, one worked just fine, the other could not hold 2 laminates took me l a lot of sweat !

I was working on somebody's laptop once and I broke the locking mechanism on the connecter that secures the keyboard cable. I used some cardboard from a ciggarette pack to secure it in there and it worked like a charm. I hope the guy never opens the thing himself. Do you guys think hot glue from a glue gun would melt the white ones?
glue gun
I used some hot glue during the construction of my projectors in casing, no problem, the laminate (white) did not wrinkle or warp at all!

cable extension of the good old days
here you see (i hope so at least) that i used a longer cable and a connector between the short original cable and the longer new one: you see it is about 8 inches long FAR TOO LANG FOR THE SIGNAL TO GO THROUGH!!!!!
the panel in this case is 5.6"

Re: Re: Same question here - is soldering needed?
Well I think the price of $239 for a new 15" Dell LCD is reasonable (and probably the cheapest). But I went ahead with Kogi 15" for $213. I have purchased it and will be disassembling it this week.
I purchased the 15" because that was the cheapest. Hardly found a new 14". Maybe I can reduce the size of the overall image by reducing the size of the viewable image area using the control panel, without compromising the quality.
