engaging little buggers, aren't they?
and since it's hard to talk about this driver without getting back to the mofo music:
SRV - I personally prefer his take on "Voodoo Child" to JH, - but my all time SRV favorite would have to be Riviera Paradise - I get goose bumps just thinking about it - have you seen the Live at Austin City Limits concert video?
Live from Austin, Texas - Stevie Ray Vaughan,Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble | Songs, Reviews, Credits, Awards | AllMusic
another very cool (instrumental) demo/assessment track for imaging, texture and bass articulation is "Duende" - Bozzio Levin Stevens (Terry can make that kit sing)
BOZZIO LEVIN STEVENS DUENDE - YouTube
and perhaps time to edit the thread title to "what I finally got about the FF85WK" - to prompt folks to read the entirety of it to appreciate your journey😉

Glad the SMSL TPA3118D2 amp worked out. Try plugging in a 19v laptop power supply to it instead of the 12v and it will sound even better.
I like Tin Pan Alley with a sub too. Try it with a tapped horn and full range tops.

HiFimeDIY Sabre USB DAC 2 (external PSU)
I need the line out. Apparently you can add a line out to the ODAC if you care to compare the two.
I'm open to EASY kits as well.
Just saw you posted above me, DOH

During January 1984, Vaughan and Double Trouble spent 19 days at the Power Station in New York City. John Hammond was executive producer and supervised the sessions.

The first track recorded was the old blues standard, "Tin Pan Alley", which was done in one take. Hammond said into the talkback microphone, "That's the best you'll ever get that song. That sounded wonderful."

Are you going to ask me if I've seen Pink Floyd - Pulse next?
Yeah I like Rivera Paradise I love that slow burn melodic stuff. Jeff Beck Cause We Ended as Lovers sounds good on these as well.
JH vs SRV - I dunno different eras. Certainly no one does justice to JH like SRV. When I was about 12 my parents made the decision to take me and my brother to see Woodstock the movie. JH and Alvin Lee (Going Home) warped my young soft brain. I had no idea at that point that 'lectric guitars could be played like that. I was still probably watching the Monkeys at that point and things like Crimson and Clover on the radio.
Also as a hobbiest guitar builder I can't talk about SRV with out saying 'Tone for Days! - Big hands, fat strings, old beat up strat, it doesn't get much better than that.

I didn't see how to do it before, but it's changed now. Good idea for the new subject line.

I have a 14v I'll plug that in later. Yeah I remember reading that 19v is considered the sweet spot. I'll get one off of Amazon later.
Any reason why I can't take a digital out from the computer to my VX1 DAC/Amp and then use the line (headphone) out to feed the 3116 to use the DAC in the VX1? Until I get one?
I use headphone out from my CD player as a preamp input to the TPA3116 - works great. Gives you volume control if your amp doesn't have one, and drives pretty high signal levels as it is 32 ohm capable.

I've owned a Sabre DAC at least three years now...love the sound...I own the non-usb version of that DAC now and the previous version before...
I think they are great and hard to beat for the price...
Before a Sabre I was NOS...before that was BB...never caught on to Cirrus or AKM or Wolfson...although others really like them for their detail...
I prefer a more organic presentation...I think with Sabre one can have both 🙂
Thanks I was at about %99 on the Sabre. I like that's in a box, not some dongle thing, and I confirmed that it outputs headphone/line simultaneous with speaker. I can drive my sub with the headphone out.
I like the line about having both.
I wish it had optical, since I paid 'extra' to get it on my motherboard and while I have plenty of USB ports I'm running short on the back of the box.
The 230v has spdif . . . Isn't USB where everything is headed anyway? And you can get Async on the 120v version for $10 (which I'll get)

I see your avant-garde Flamenco(?) and give you something that it reminded me of in my twisted since seeing woodstock brain. Aynsley Dunbar kicking the drums. For the 'jam' (it's all instrumental) you can pick it up at 1:20 but stay for the drum break at 3:20

The album is a remix and for once I prefer it to the original. Is it me or does a lot of remixes sound like they turned up the treble and called it a day?
And the whole album sounds really good on the 85's I even turned off the sub!!! Which just made me realize how much this new amp is doing!!! And I feel better about the 40hrs I spent (all my 'fault') on the uFonkens. It's amazing how much problems you create for yourself from the git-go being a perfectionist.
I still hate all of you for making me 'wrong' about these!

Even though I trust said in jest, I think "hate" is a destructive emotion - at least as much for the "sender" as the intended target(s) 😉
I tend to agree about remixes / remasters - although likely filtered by remembrances of the originals in both 8track car stereo and /or vinyl, I was sorely disappointed by re-issues of the earliest Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd UmmaGumma ( some pretty strange stuff on the studio sides of that double album set - must have the long nights and lack of coffee at work😛)
Ah, yes FZ -one of the true musical geniuses of the past 50 yrs - puerile lyrics notwithstanding - but then again it was that juxtaposition that invited you to use more than 10% of your brain in listening, which was perhaps too much for some folks to take in anything but doses too short to grasp the arc of story telling
Or maybe it's just the Chardonnay talking

It's, I dunno, satire, some kind of opposite thing that expresses a frustration that says I can't thank you all enough for turning what I thought was a wasted investment in money and time into objects that do the work of playing the magic called music. But your are right. When I managed a fast food place I wouldn't let the kids use the word hate as in 'I hate that girl'.
Thats a good description of him as any. But after the days of the 'mothers' the caliber of musicians he played with was incredible. I like the 70s stuff the best. It was getting more light hearted, heading towards what I felt was the apogee of Apostrophe. But I have to admit I wore out a copy of Live at the Fillmore East which could only be described as filthy. I was a teenager . . . what can I say. But yes the theme's of his albums did take some time to fully reveal themselves and, at least I did, they were mocking as much as shocking. It was a 'let me hold a mirror up to your face' kind of thing. And another guy with amazing guitar sound/tone.
Edit: I just noticed you mentioned ummagumma, another album I wore out. The PU's stereo was nothing fancy. No tone arms balanced by angel wings and made of unobtanium.

Above I wrote: Room acoustics are almost overblown, I probably just need to get used to them.
And I said that Frank Zappa sounded so good I turned off the sub, turns out the sub was ruining the SQ.
And that the drums on Tin Pan Alley sounded like "cannons"
There is something going on. Something to do with the sub. I'll troubleshoot it in the morning. I'm using the high-level inputs. A wire reversed or something creating some kind of phase issue.

Perhaps brash is a better word. I knew they would be a bit forward and perhaps that is part of what I hear, but I feel like I'm separating out the forwardness/shouty from my perception of the sound signature.
The few times I've seen an independent FR plot of an (unmodified) Fostex, it has been obvious that the official Fostex plots use magic smoothing to take 5dB or more off their HF spikes.
Troels measured a 10dB spike on the 126E which barely appears on the factory graph: Fostex FE126E +
Zaph audio got a 10dB spike on the FF165: Zaph|Audio
I recorded (rough test conditions, but it's hard to miss) a colossal hump on the FF105WK: http://quickbrownfish.weebly.com/fostex-experiment.html
Assuming that the same pattern holds true for the FF85WK, and the official 5dB spike at 10kHz is actually 10dB or more, this might explain why you find it brash.
That's interesting. I've been keeping them pointing straight out. I also find them to sound best with a faux BSC(EQ) of 3db pulled starting at about 660. I like to think that the uFonken enclosures tame that a bit. I've considered doing a set of OS's to compare with. I have have also been considering a future project with something from MA.

ezas: for "something from MA" - this would be the perfect time to await initial field reports on two new models of paper drivers in the 4" or so range - CHN70 and A7P.
Mark has two levels of products - the ever expanding CH series (70mm cones) , and the Alpair line - with a wider range of sizes (60/70/100&120mm) . While most of his "evolutionary" work has been with the metals, his paper drivers are definitely worth considering as well. I've played with almost every model in his current line, and thought I had a single favorite (A7.3), but am no longer so confident of that single choice - i.e. there is no "best.." 😀.

heyThere is some serious IMHO in this statement.😱
Yes, the DAC's in the minDSP are not the best. I use the nanoDIGI which is SPDIF in/out so that I use external DAC's. You need to tread lightly, though, when you imply that only vinyl through tubes can produce a good outcome. Them's fight'n words, y'all! But if you are interested in why my opinion, take it to a PM. Let's not rehash it here.
Bob
well, humbely, my listening test have shown me, my girlfriend and my friends pretty sure that the mini dsp is not totally transparent enough if you use the analog input

Yes, and that is why I when to the nanoDIGI. The miniDSP is only analogue input, so it includes a ADC, then the processing and finally a not so good DAC. The nanoDIGI is SPDIF in and SPDIF out. No analogue conversions either way. But, of course, you need an external DAC for each pair of outputs. No free lunch.
