Technics also made a series of flat diaphragm drivers. The woofers and mud were just normal cone drivers with a plastic flat honey one disc glued on a clear plastic cone attached to the vc. In a word crap.
There were also Bertangi(sp?) flat planar ish plastic diaphragm speakers used in arrays back in the early 80s. They were little rectangular panels about half an inch deep. Odd to say the least. Very inefficient.
I'm not sure how weird this one is, but there's some kind of synthetic "woven thatching" used in place of the cone, with a big dust cap and huge surround. Got it for small money about 15 years ago, labelled as "Zipp 20 ZOW2", plays like a car subwoofer, but unfortunately no T/S parameters or data are available, so that it could be put into a proper "box".

You've just reminded me of the old Yamaha flat speakers. The JA-5002, it looks like these were used in the NS-20 and NS-330 models, possibly others.Technics also made a series of flat diaphragm drivers. It looks like the cone here is a polystyrene foam. More images found here:

We used to call these Yamahas above "elephant ears". But the only ones I had seen live had black cones.
