The next big surprise was the Damson (no votes) and the Pomegranate (most votes)
Damson was the NE5532 and the Pomegranate the LM4562.

Apple and the Pear. Interesting result because these were the TLE2072 and TLO72 respectively.
Which leaves the wild card. This was the Peach.
OK, I hold my hands up because you would never guess this one and in fact the circuitry was different but I really wanted to see what you made of it. It was a current feedback opamp, the LT1229.
Who liked that one and why ? Technically that had the highest slew rates of all, its in the hundreds of volts per microsecond region.

😉 Too slow with your edit 😛 Surprisingly good isn't it.
😱
Hey..but I picked banana😉
A quick listen,
Laptop permitting. 🙂
😕 is it me or does C sound closer to the master and B have what sounds like more 3rd harmonic? LOL
Anyone else got any ideas? 😀
Regards
M. Gregg
You liked the................. OPA134
To me, I hear a bit more sharpness to the violins in C, so B is the 741.
Yes 😀
In your new test both recordings are similar, C has just a bit more noise than B. Can only hear that on headphones, tho.
Hmmm 😀 Pano heard most noise on C, Ron heard it on B.
Between a, b and c, I definitely hear more noise in b and c, and c sounds somewhat more harmonically rich. C also seems louder than A or B. I vote for B, as it sounds more like the original.
It is much easier to listen to short samples than a three minute piece. I would vote for 15 seconds or less for each of your "fruity" series, and leave the too-loud violin piece out.
Ron heard more noise in B but voted sonics as best for B. Thats an honest choice. I don't mind a bit of hiss in original recordings tbh, it can add a slight patina thats not unpleasant.
Indeed I needed to think hard about it. I was confused from previous experience where orange has the highest distortion but is favorable. I'm not familiar with 741 sound but it is hard to believe if it can sound like orange, which is close to tube sound. In my prediction 741 should have sounded hard but vintage chips do sound more open.
But there is clear difference between orange and B here. They have high distortion (orange was worst) but B is very fatiguing. I'm familiar with opa134 and it is not fatiguing because the distortion is second order.
Where's Jay... again 😀
You have a thing about the OPA134 but you are correct again. B was the 741.
Can you really tell them apart that much Jay? Have you tried a blind test?
I don't know how he does it. Must be that super hand phone he mentioned at the start 😛

So..
741 and other vintage ones arent that bad after all...a bit surprised.
5532..are they old Signetics?
Music after going through an lm4562 sounds better..😱

I was 100% sure that Peach is direct. It is "perfect". No perceived trouble in reproducing sounds. Reminds me of Esperado who compared the output of CF opamp and found it close to direct.
I expected banana was lm4562 and orange was opa134 because I like them the most. I guessed the second order distortion of op134 will show in soundstage or vocal. Orange vocal with music#1 was very beautiful like tub.
The highest slew rate I guessed pomegranate because I could have like it too, except for something I don't understand so I suspected oscillation with wide band opamp.

The 5532's are Texas. Surprising what you can do with a 741 isn't it.

Here's the LT1229 for real on a scope. In the test circuit in this thread I checked it was stable before making the files.

Thanks Mooly, this test has been fun and educational!
Wondered why Lm4562 perceived better than direct though....

Pomegranate was tle2072 wasn't it? 45v/us, the highest except for the wild card. Is it stable too?

No, Apple was the TLE2072. It was stable.
For anyone interested, here is the master file that hasn't been through the A-D process.
