Tranny Order
Hi,
Right I am right in the middle of the cap order...........I am sorting out the boxing up of the caps @ present........I intend to get them sent out next week after Easter weekend......phew.
I was going to place the order for the trannys..........about a week after.......this will allow all the transfers to clear and for the credit card to cool off!!!! So the cut off day I propose will be.....
Monday 19th April......is that ok.....????
This is the most uptoadte list so far!
Jason Hubbard 8x1000va

Im happy with April the 19th.
All I need is to be sure that I get the trafo's 😉
How about you getting paid in advance for the trafos to ease off your credit card?
Its only 6 persons, so it wouldnt be too hard to do that way, but you wouldnt have to put your own money into it.....your creditcard might like the idea of that 🙂

Just a quick PS question:
My caps are rated at 25V, 230,000uF(!). Now I assume that unloaded, these xformers will be about 25-27V AC. If using a CRC PS, will the first capacitor see 27V or should it be sufficienly dropped? Maybe I should use the "Stubby" caps for the first ones, then the large caps after that?
Any input?
Cheers,
Gaz

PS Question
The RMS voltage on the diode bridge will be about 25.5 volts, but the bridge itself will drop 0.6v off each rail bringing you just under the 25v limit on your caps.
Personally i wouldn't run them that close to their limits as it's probably a recipe for premature failure.

So using the 50V stubby caps (rated at 50V) then a resistor, and finally my large 25V caps should do the trick? How far below 25V should I be?

PS Question
Personal opinion only, but i'd not go higher than 22-23v.
Also be aware that if the load goes 'offline' then the voltage will shoot up on the last capacitors in the chain as the voltage drop in the R element of your CRC filter will no longer be there (at least not to the same degree). This is quite likely during your testing phase....
OI think i'd just play safe with higher voltage caps all the way through - you should have no trouble selling your large caps to a lower voltage AX builder.

Thermistors
Having had a look around here is a cheaper alternative to the CL60.
Epcos' BS57237S0100M000 slightly lower current rating but this should not be an issue when 4 are paralleled.
http://www.buerklin.com/gruppen/KapE/E111900.asp
Very good price breakpoint at 50 of 41 Euro each.
I will be putting an order in when I return from my holidays in two weeks. If anyone is interested please let me know.
Rarkov for the PSU caps I would definitely not use the 25V ones in the described PSU. My experience has been painful and expensive, and now go for a minimum rating of 1.5 x Vdc. My 22mF 63V caps 1.7 times over rating have lasted 18 years in a very heavily abused amp (many thermal trip outs), the previous ones only lasted a few months tops. It was a poor look out for a student then as they were £8 a go surplus nearer £25 new.

I'm not going to get rid of these caps...They're fantastic!
D3: Can you remove me from the transformer group buy, unless you can get a lower secondary voltage (ideally 16V - 16.5V) for the same price?
Thanks,
Gaz

PS Question
If you run dual bridge rectifiers you'll loose 1.2 to 1.4 volts off each rail - if the load disappears at least you have a little more safety....

PSU and Aleph X choice

The option I am looking at, is the group buy transformer using an LCLC "choke regulated" PSU. This usually gives a Vdc of 0.9 x Tranny secondary ie 16.2v.
Then using 8 or 12 x 044's per channel at 7A+ bias to give 50W into 4ohm and 100W into 8ohm. This would give you the option to use your caps.
I feel 50W is a good compromise output and not too much heat to dissipate ~250W channel.

Richard,
yes, I have transferred the money. Hopefully you will have it very soon.
Sorry to be a late payer - not my MO! 🙁

Hi Rarkov are you still going for the trannies@ 18v????????
Bearing inmind Sinera's comments?????

Hi D3,
Keep me in...I'll find out more about this choke regulation.
I can't imagine that 25V is the absolute maximum. There must be some sort of safety margin to play with. However, I feel blowing up 4 x 230,000uF cap and 4 x 33,000uF would not be in my best interests!
I am starting to favour the LCLC idea. It would allow me to make an external PSU in relative safety. Also, these caps are rated at 85 degsC so I wouldn't mind keeping the temp down. I want to make a visual clone of the following (it has an external PSU for each channel):
http://www.manger-audio.co.uk/amplifiers-asr.htm
FYI:
I was at Manger yesterday (8/4/04) auditioning the Manger Zerobox 103 (semi active) (http://www.manger-audio.co.uk/manger-speakers-103-SACB.htm). The ones in the picture are the exact ones! Very beautiful!!!
The setup was an ASR Emitter 2, Manger Zerobox 103 and a Wadia CD player. I am borrowing the Zerobox 109s (http://www.manger-audio.co.uk/manger-speakers-109.htm Bottom Picture)
This has me totally captivated! I am going to buy 6 Manger drivers (he'll do it for just over £2500 - but these have to be heard to be believed!).

Pity to miss you on Friday.
Exciting to start getting the parts, must get the other half to give the ok on the amps look.
I will be going on holiday on Sunday for 10 days, so if you need the money for the trannys before I go let me know.
The Manger speakers look very interesting, cannot wait to hear Rarkov's view on the 109's, that he is lucky enough to have borrowed.
I am thinking on the speaker front of using the accuton ceramics for treble and mid driven by the aleph X and using some thing like http://www.lcaudio.com/ zapulse 2.2SE class D on the bass.
Though Ribbons and now the Manger MSW are now in my thoughts.
I heard the accutons in some speakers at last Sept' HiFi Expo in Heathrow and was very impressed, being as clear to my ears as the Martin Logan electrostatics.

I use the Visaton MHT-12 ribbons in my present speakers, and I have to say that the Mangers wipe the floor with them. The sound is very akin to electrostatics. There is NO listening fatigue as there is no mechanical noise from the driver.
I will do a full review soon. I want to take some measurements too & compare to my present speakers.

Hi,
Just thought I'd let you know about the spakers I currently use....
which are Rega Elys...........these are very slender transmission line speakers...............rated @ 4ohms..............
20mm tweater ..... modified by rega
Custom 4.5 inch mid base made by rega
No crossover.........only a resistor to tweater
They are really extreamly good for uk homes......they sound very detailed but smooth....as good as anything I have heard.........
and that goes to silly money.....the sound is highly integrated
fast and very dynamic...........the only limitation is absolute volume...but they go pretty load.
I suggest you bin any predjudice and just have a listen............
but make sure you use a fast and clean amp
If i have a criticism.......it would be leveled at the mid range voice
which I detect as sometimes sounding higher than some other speakers.
I really do recomend them......
Oh price approx £600
D3 ps they are female frendly too!!!

Hello,
If possible I might be interested in 2 of the trafo's!?
I am from Denmark.
Who do I need to contact?
Also did I understand it correct that the price is around £30 a piece with the shield etc.? And what about payment is paypal an option?
Thanks
Martin
