Airlink Transformers

I have just called Airlink and they ARE happy to sell in quantities as little as 1!

I suggested that a group buy from this forum would be a possibility - they are prepared to give us the discounts for the combined quantity but still ship individually (obviously shipping charges would apply to each of us).

Could those that want in on this arrangement agree on a common specification?

My suggestion would be 750 or 1000va with 2 x 18v secondaries with a steel band (screening?, which they add for audio use, if it's not that much extra cost). My preference is for the 1000va as there is only a small premium to pay for a lot more iron.
Anybody needing to lose a few volts can use a CRC filter, anybody wanting to keep the volts can use a CLC filter!

I need 10 transformers anyway, so we could potentially hit a very good price break with only a few interested members.

Any takers?

Airlink Trannies

Hi All,

I also spoke with Airlink. Not only will they do as Jason said, but they are happy to supply potted trannies (is that resin-filled??), flexible leads of any length you like, banded, etc. I wonder if we can get a better than average spec agreed for the group purchase? What about specifying a better spec of winding wire etc? I am hoping to use some of my group order in my GC project, so is the 1000VA the rating we need, or can it be (say) 500VA? Sorry, but I am going to "clone" my AXs as I am a total amp noob!! 🙄

Suffice to say that the sinks look good, and the thought of matched mosfets at a good price (how do you match them??).

Cheers for now!

Jon 😀

Might be interested in traffos, depending on price and specs, probably 2 to start, maybe more depending on price.

BP, the cheque is in the post, sorry for the delays, I was waiting for people to pay invoices... Ahh, the joys of being a freelancer!

Transformer spec

I would not be interested in dropping the VA rating to 500va - the larger the transformer the better your project will sound regardless of the actual current draw you require from it, for me the 1000va had the best price/performance ratio.

As for up-spec'ing the transformer with higher quality wire, etc - not sure that there will be any benefit in this - the wire they wind with will be capable of passing 28 amps continuously - how much thicker does anybody think it needs to be?
And will it be justified if the price gets hiked up because of it?

For me the only variable at the moment is the steel band - i'll get a price with/without and post when i get an answer.

Possible transformer group buy

I have faxed Airlink a quotation request earlier today asking for prices based on a quantity of either 25 or 50 for both 750va or 1000va transformers.

I have asked for prices for either 2 x 115v Primary windings or 1 x 230v primary winding (a single primary is OK for me but it was sort of requested earlier in the thread) and dual 18v secondary windings (what is the concensus of opinion on voltage - these will be custom wound, so we could go for an "odd" inbetween voltage like 16v if it fitted everyones needs better).

I also asked how much extra the steel bands would add to each transformer.

To keep things simple (and keep the costs down) i asked for the transformers to be supplied with the standard 2 x rubber washers and dished steel washer fixing kit (rather than resin centred/potted, etc) and advised that flexible leads were not a requirement (i.e. they will just be thick copper insulated flying leads of 200 to 300mm with tinned ends).

I'll post their reply when it comes through.

Tranny

18v for me..........I agree about potting.....but really would like the sheilding.....looking forward to the quote!

Sorry for my ignorance why do people want 2X115v primarys? What is the advantage?????

Dual 115v Primaries

I believe Jon Clancy stated earlier in the thread that he was interested in the possibility of dual primaries.

These would make the transformers suitable for use in non-european countries, but i'm not sure that our expected low cost would work in any other countries favour after adding in the higher export shipping costs of these heavy items.

matched mosfets!!!

I have recieved the following.......from Anders.....who's interesed so we can calculated quantities.....please post

Subject: SV: Matching mosfets

I might be interested in matching for you. After all it would be a better use of the money and time I spend on building the tester. I have already bought MOSFETS already though...... at rather good prices I must say🙂

How manny matched sets would you like, and how many transistors in each sett??? The transistors I have is IRFP044N, and I have 100 of the same batch 🙂. There should be possible to

get some good matched sets from that batch, but it all depends on how many you want. If you want many, or you know of more people that want me to match transistors I could ask them if it would be possible to get more from the same batch.

What I want for myself fromt these 100 is 4 channels with 4 transistors, 2 with 16 and then I have 4 more channels. I'm not sure how many I need for them, but with 8 or 12..... and most of the 100 I have is gone.... withch also were the reason for buying 100.....
But it is possible to get more, the thing is that it would be best to get the same batch. And if there are more people interrested in getting matched setts it would be best to buy all at the same time to get the same batch.

Ok, come back to me what your plans are so I know what the need is.

Anders

Airlink Transformer Prices

Ok - The fax has arrived and details are as follows;

750va , single 230v primary & dual 18v secondaries - £19.69
1000va , single 230v primary & dual 18v secondaries - £22.52

Prices above are for 25 units. Price reduces by about 60p if we can get to a quantity break of 50.

The dual 115v primaries add about £1 to the price.

Steel bands add about £1.50 to the price.

Delivery leadtime is about 4 weeks.

Who's interested and who's going to volunteer to organise it?

Tranny's

Right......I would be willing to take this on....members definately wanting tranny's would have to agree on a std spec.

I suggest:
1000va
18-0-18
Magnetic sheilding
+ Mounting Washers

Please email me directly and I will put together a list and post it on this site......I will post list in a weeks time........once we have a decent quantity I will email you and request cheques that included postage............is that ok.

Can someone take on the mosfet challenge with anders

Richard

68,000uf CAPACITORS

I have recieved a reply from BG .....they will do 68,000 capacitors for 4 bucks each.............shipping would be 39 bucks for 8.......
this works out at approx £4 each + vat..........not bad !!!!:devilr: :smash:

I also just recieved a mail from BG micro, with an aim to a slightly bigger order. For 72 caps, it would come to about $400 dollars each, which is slightly over £3.00 per cap (assuming we miss import duty and the like). I would still very much like to try and order some of these (and although there would be a large upfront cost for me, I'm sure I could just about manage it if people wanted to get in on this one. (As I obviousley won't need all of those 72) It would be good if people let me know if they are interested, and I may also pop this up in the trading post section too see if any one else is intrested (or just put the extras in there once I'm finished).

Edit: That would be about $400 in total, not each, and even if they do add import duty and VAT to that price they should still come in at most around £4.00 (including the VAT, duty and postage within the UK) each as a final price.
