Re: switch-mode power supply

did anyone already read the articel on the hypex site?
article

in the last sentance they mention switch mode-power supplies will come available by hypex.

What is the big advantage of a switch mode power supply over a convetional one?
efficiency?

is it worth waiting for? (I was planning on building sometinh with a UcD180 this christmas)

I bet it won't be cost. Just glad it sounds like it will be an optional supply and not intrinsic.

Usually it's reduced weight and size. Standard raw DC PSU's are rather efficient, power factor aside. SMPS may include PFC, I imagine from past posts their's will, and tight regulation.

I think I understand where you're coming from, but I would suppose the meaning and level of DIY is different for everyone. One person may get enormous satisfaction out of wiring together the "best available" modules into a nice chassis, etc. and leave it at that; while another aspires to design their circuits from the ground up. Is one approach any less rewarding than the other?

BTW, will your UcD modules be up for sale anytime soon? 😉

Hmm, I don't want to think about the dark side of things but... The article says that the UCD technology is licensed from Philips.

A little bit later, Bruno disappears from Philips and ends up at Hypex. I hope this won't lead to the end of that license.

Never mind me, I'm a pessimist :xeye:

It depends how you view "rewarding" too I suppose. I'm not a SMPS designer and wont' have one on the market anytime soon, rewarding to me would be everything I learn building one, if I ever do, bonus if it actually works, and at least then it will be unique, somewhat.

It seems like adapting an existing one is another option, thank you for that fine work Gertjan.

Bruno's name is on the patent as well as Philips, they own the license as well as they employed him, he didn't lose the rights to it.

Regards,
Chris

Argh, of course not! But it will open the oportunity for some new Class-D designs what can be patented!

Hypex wants to be a major player in the Class-D world.... 😉

It's hard to call it a monopoly but the business they get is much deserved. The UCDs are a wonderful product that Bruno & Jan-Peter have a every right to be proud of.

Their service and support is superb also and they conduct themselves very professionally, both on these boards and in person.

I'm awaiting my pair of UCD700s with much anticpation. I keep telling myself that I don't need the power but I'm sure Bruno & Jan-Peter have put their best effort forward on them. 🙂

With the UCD-180s & 400s being so good... it's a tough act to follow. It's hard to design something that sounds better than their entry level product! For a measly couple hundred bucks you can get world class amplification these days thanks to Hypex.

Seriously are they really "world class"? Not that I doubt you, the best amp I have ever heard was a class D amp, but almost all the production models have sounded less than spectacular compared to that one I heard. And I have heard plent of other amps that have sounded better than most of the class D amps I have heard. I don't really want to get into all the class D amps I have heard and I thought were less than spectacular, as I don't want to start bashing any particular company. And I really don't want to talk about the one that was just over the top for me. All I want to know is: What amps do you consider "world class", that you have heard and compared the UCD amps to?

Terry🙂

Hi All,

Just completed my amp and I would like to know what to expect in terms of DC offset on the output. These are unmodified 180AD modules, one measures <1mv while the other is -22mv. Certainly not a big deal, just curious if this is a normal variation for these modules.

Thanks!
