I've edited my post a bit with another idea of the studio monitor + sub - does that work for you? Bob Brines IIRC has run his Alp 7.3 TL and a 12" sub for quite some time with satisfactory results.

I couldn't live with 2 x 4" drivers stacked under over facing you (like a derringer).
It helped sound cleaner, but I had to level them with pennies sitting 10' away, any slouching and highs were lost.
2 x 4" worked well crossing 24db 5khz to a piezo.
Assuming you can live with the bass that comes from 2 x 4" of cone area.
A woofer run wide open (but was rolling maybe 500hz due to inductance) worked well, especially making up for the narrow baffle I had the 4's on.
