The trick is never stop turning the music off, this way you can't hear them complain!😀I wish my neighbors will be very understanding...
When someone did more than 100 speaker designs, and after all this year's then he chooses PA drivers, does it bigger than normal, and is that satisfied that he just calls it "The Loudspeaker", then to all reading his homepage should be clear, that this is in his eyes a speaker, which does so much aspects right, that he an just enjoy music!
When I first flew over the article, I liked that he now has a classic design with PA chassis. Reading it concentrated, I realized that the maybe bass 10" is actually a 18"!
Now we have a big living room, perfect for this speakers, but what will the next look like?
Concerning the heavy membrane: (I'm not a speaker expert, but I think) you need a heavy membrane if you want to play lower frequencys AND at the same time just allow for small cabinets.
Unfortunately the same principle in small, nice, WAF-friendly speakers which led to so much woofers in the Hifi industry killing all the dynamics and micro details, if you don't go a different route.
Cheers,
Matthias
This reminds me when I was a kid listening to some old and supposedly wise guy reviewing movies on ABC. He kept saying all movies are crap except for the very intellectual ones that nobody goes to see. He said TopGun was crap but everybody went to see it.
Maybe Troels is starting to suffer the same illness. I don't know. He did say the Satori 29 tweeter was one of the best regardless of price. I am not saying his latest speakers are not "The One", but he has his own perspective. Does that mean his "The One" better than a good horn? Better than array? Each speaker excels in a certain aspect. Looking at the cabinet design, soundstage image is probably not ideal, so it's not like it's the best at everything although no doubt it has the dynamic which is a given, given the size of the drivers.
TopGun was crap.
Generally I find in movies and music to be hugely successful the product must be hugely mediocre but with first class marketing. There are very few exceptions in either genre when something really good got really successful but they are very, very few in number.

That hurts. I love TopGun ... maybe not Tom Cruise but the movie was real cool.
Maybe Troels after listening to hundreds of speakers his opinions and perspective are different from the average listener. Supposedly if I were a beauty pageant judge and years after years looking at hot chics, I might find them boring and start finding ugly girls hot.

He has sponsors that make good money from him and in return they shower him with free parts and praise - wouldn't be surprising to me if he felt some pressure to show speakers that use as many of their drivers as he can - he's a marketing engine for them. It's difficult to believe that his projects are 100% independent DIY. But that doesn't mean I don't admire his work and if I liked one of his designs I would be sorely tempted to go with one even though the price of entry is to buy premium grade parts that may or may not border on the audiophool.
Top Gun was a good movie when it came out, but it shows it's age these days.

Still the coolest dog fight movie. It's in the same league as Dr. Stangelove in its timeless relevancy.

Blasphemy!
Besides I must have listened to dozens or hundreds of speakers and I still like the same things as always.
Just now I know the most likely route of getting there.

Troels does actually qualify by saying to his ears, your ears may be different.also he gives options for hf resistors to suit taste in most designs.
His ears are similar to mine so I find the speakers I built sound great also my room is like a scandinavian room, hard surfaces and just a small rug.

I think Troels ears are fairly normal and the kit this thread is about his most promising so far.

They're the same. TopGun is about boys and girls. Dr. StrangeLow is when boys and girls have grown up.
Top gun is one of my fave films of all times probably an age thing when it came out. I was about 14 years old and she took my breath away, and I never lost that loving feeling, my mate pinched/stole the 45 record Righteous brothers from dj at youth club disco🙄
Troels is no dummy let’s not forget that. Look at all his builds to date they certainly ain’t Shiite
Just wish he would do a danley style

Dynamics and real soundstage come from large sensitive drivers that are not overdriven,
like he says and those that have the room, when a driver makes its presence known without you knowing the driver is bearly moving it’s doing something right. As one grins to himself
Watts are cheap but trying to look at a driver bouncing in and out and the dissmall sound and SPL reproduce they are certainly disappointing.

He is limited by the drivers available from his sponsors. He can't easily, for example, explore a FAST style of speaker as the 10F is all he can choose from. I'm not sure if the best drivers for a Danley style are available from his sponsors but as I understand, they are not trivial to design XO's for either.

I have the same feeling watching Dr. StrangeLove.
The-Loudspeaker
Troels also designed a JBL 4345 type 4-way speaker which he named "The-Loudspeaker"
18" woofer = BMS 18N862-8
10" midrange = 10NMBA520
1" compression driver = 18 Sound NSD1095N
1" horn = 18 Sound XT1086
super tweeter = Fostex FT96H
=============
Basics:
-Four-way floor-stander from 18" +10" + 1" comp. driver + horn-loaded tweeter.
-Finished speaker weight: 85 kgs/ea.
-Sensitivity: 95 dB/2.8V/1 meter.
-Impedances: MTT section: 4-8 Ohms, minimum 4.3 Ohms @ 600 Hz. Bass section 8 Ohm, minimum 6.5 Ohms @ 25 Hz. If run fully passive from one amplifier, minimum impedance will be 3.0 Ohms @ 120 Hz.
-Points of crossover: 200, 1300 and 9000 Hz.
-Bi-amping is highly recommended if no Hypex module is used (passive version).
-Cabinet dimensions: 65 x 45 x 105 cm (WxDxH), 307 litres gross volume.
-Power requirement: 30+ watts for mid-tweeters section. 200+ watts for bass.
Well, well... Seems mr. Gravesen has beaten me to my dream of recreating the 4345 "at some point in the future"... Great work, though, and it's nice to notice that he too has "seen the light" regarding large drivers. And his comments on the sound of these larger cones seem to reflect quite closely what I and many others have noticed listening to many projects with larger diaphragms.
I bought, tested, and returned a 10NDA610.....and will probably be buying two next time. I already have a pair of BMS cones, and was already planning on buying a ND3ST.
Looks like experienced minds converge on similar ideas.

It's not so long ago that I've heard the original, restored 4345's. And amidst all these slim towers with puny "bass" drivers maybe just 5,25 inches small, when you experience a loudspeaker that can literally blur your vision and still sound completely effortless and free of distortion, is when you finally realize that small drivers and slim towers are a waste of time and there's a reason why these decades old speakers are still legendary. Great to finally see a modern take on these, even though I would've wanted to be there first.
The reason we liked top gun was cos we were young. The reason it hasn't aged well is because we are mature enough and smart enough to see it for what it is. Crap. Dr Strangelove is timeless classic imo.

Instead of cloning a 4-way JBL 4345 monitor, do you have any forward thinking big-dream speaker design ideas?
-Using DSP with multiple amps dramatically changes both the design and design process from beginning to end. `
-For home, ports no longer seem necessary. Monster 18" BMS 18N862 woofer with sealed box room equalization down to 20Hz are simple with modest cost DSP/plate amps.
-4-way not mandatory. Latest Tech 12" midbass and 1" compression drivers have excellent frequency and directivity performance from 1,200Hz - 20,000Hz
-90H*40V polar pattern best fits HT and family couch, but large circular JMLC horns(Lynn Olson thread) get top praise for solo critical listening.
-Cabinet shape still important. DSP cannot correct edge diffraction distortion. Sexy still sells!
